Created by: Hockey_Hippy
Team: 2023-24 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 22, 2023
Published: Dec. 22, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Calgary needs a re-build, Edmonton needs a reliable partner for Skinner and a bit of cap flexibility, New Jersey needs a stud netminder who can give them 60 games and a defensive upgrade.
Trades
1.
NJD
  1. Broberg, Philip
  2. Campbell, Jack ($1,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Edmonton gets out from most of Campbell's contract and acquires a goalie with a decent *pro* track record who can split time with Skinner and is four years younger than Pickard.
EDM
  1. Vanecek, Vitek
  2. 2025 3rd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
New Jersey acquires a toolsy young defenseman who needs a re-boot with another organization.
2.
NJD
  1. Hanifin, Noah
  2. Markström, Jacob
Additional Details:
Calgary gets an enviable package of youth and prospects to start their re-build with but have to take on a half-price Jack Campbell to do so.
CGY
  1. Bahl, Kevin
  2. Campbell, Jack ($1,000,000 retained)
  3. Holtz, Alexander
  4. 2024 1st round pick (NJD)
  5. 2025 2nd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
New Jersey gets the stud defensemen on the left they need to pair with Hamilton when he comes back (this assumes an extension is signed) plus a goalie that has recently finished second in the Vezina, but they take a hit in the pipeline to do so.

No to all of that
Bahl>Broberg
Markstrom at 6 mill is not a good idea. (actually 7 mill considering we eat 1 mill AAV on campbell).

Then 1 year of 5 mill hanifin for Holtz+1+2. That's a holtz too much on that alone

Markstrom is one year removed from the Vezina finals. When a team plays defense in front of him he is fine. *As I mentioned* in the additional notes, I'm assuming you sign Hanifan to an extension. That makes the price worth paying as it is roughly comparable to the Meier deal. Hanifan on an extension plus Siegenthaler and Hughes makes Bahl irrelevant. Broberg plays both sides but needs a reboot.

Markstrom > Campbell, No reason for Calgary to do this. Unless they go full rebuild mode.

That's exactly what I expect they will do.

Markstrom is 34 years old and has 2 more years after this one.

In the last decade just 1 goalie has played at a above average level through their age 34, 35, 36 seasons, while maintaining a starters workload. That was mike smith. And even in that stretch he wasn't a top 10 goalie (which is what markstroms cap hit would require him to be).

Even best case scenario for markstrom, where he plays at a level that no other goalie has from 34-36, he's still probably only just barely worth his contract that we could probably replace with a UFA

Worst case scenario he falls off like 95% of goalies at this age and we're stuck with 12 million that can't be moved bc he has a full NMC and destroys our current window, and our future window bc we gave up all these assets.

Meier was an RFA. Which meant we controlled his rights.
Hanifin is a UFA, which means we wouldn't. They are not comparable

No ****e they do - All they have to do to shed the Campbell contract is to trade a project player and retain $1M. It is Calgary and especially NJ who say no to this one!

I've always been of the opinion that 95% of your goalies play as well as the team in front of them defends. I think New Jersey, especially adding Hanifan to Hamilton on the top pairing going forward and backing that up with a pairing of Siegenthaler/Marino (or Nemec eventually) plus Ruff as the coach would be better than what Calgary is putting out there currently. That said, I think he is simply better than Vanecek. Given the latter's age, if he was going to approach Markstrom's level of consistency and usage, he would have done so by now. Beyond that he has 2 years left after this one and he is 33. This means his deal ends after 35, not 36.

I do not think there is a goalie out there you could sign for less that would give you as much. I think there are several that could give you Vanecek, but you've seen what he can do. It's not enough.

And again, when I proposed this trade it was with the assumption that the Devils sign Hanifan to an extension. I do not propose this deal otherwise. That you keep bringing this up as a reason to flag it after I have twice now pointed out the misrepresentation of what I am proposing is telling.

Markstrom is 34 before the deadline. Which means the devils would be getting him at age 34, 35, and 36.

An extension on Hanifin at UFA prices doesn’t add value. He’s a pending UFA. Making him a rental.

Ok, so we can go around and around this bush forever. I say "I would not make this proposal unless Hanifan is signed to an extension" then you say "This proposal sucks because Hanifan is not signed to an extension."

Markstrom's birthday is Jan/31. That means he plays 4 months as a 33 year old and 2 and a little bit as a 34 year old.

Get a life dude.
