2024-25 Oilers Idea

Created by: PurpleHippo
Team: 2024-25 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 5, 2024
Published: Jan. 5, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Idea is that we have our 2 year window after this season so we construct all our contracts that way and respond to if Mcd re-signs in 2026 (Drai signing a 1 year deal in 2025). It's competitive given the ~6.3 Mill in dead cap but it solidifies us this year and next plus gives enough money for Bouch/Drai/Mcleod signing in 2025.

Montreal trade potentially needs a pick going the other way but otherwise it's close.
87,700,000 cap is off the most recent estimate I've heard of.

Interesting trade there. Anderson a bit worrying as a power forward that the game is passing by. But his playoff grit is still something that could interest a contender. Evans is meh, but maybe still untapped potential left.

Why would Montreal trade Josh Anderson?
Do you think he can help the Oilers for the playoffs?

Evans isn't exactly meh, he's a solid bottom 6C.
There's no untapped potential either. That's just what he is.
No more, no less.

I like this trade for the Oilers, but then they'd have to trade away Kane. Kane and Anderson play the same game, but both would be in their 30s. Kane is already declining, Anderson is too. Wouldn't want both of them in our top 6.

I think its a pass on habs side. I get the quebec players appeal but Bourgault trajectory doesnt look great and Lavoie wasnt claim on waiver earlier this year..

Solid bottom 6C is kinda meh though by definition. You are right though, at 27 this probably is who he is.

I'm a fan of Anderson, I like how he plays and what he brings, could mesh well with Drai too and rounds out our top 6 in a nice way.
IMO Anderson plays a little more like Hyman than Kane, gritty player who gets into the corner and dirty area's to get his chances/goals.
At 2.75 it could pay off well and if it back fires it isn't too big a pill to swallow.

I feel like not many people on this site agree but I actually like Anderson's play, 5.5 is a little high for him though.
Idk if MTL would want to move him, I assume at this price they may consider it but who really knows.

I can see a draft pick being included in this due to the retention but realistically you wouldn't get much more for these 2 (if MTL was considering trading them).
Bourgault for Anderson is equal, maybe a 3-4th for retention (again if MTL is looking to make a deal) but without retention Anderson leans more into the cap dump scope.
Lavoie for Evans is equal, Lavoie has better AHL numbers at his age, may develop with more ice time on MTL.

Sure, but I still think you're overvaluing him. In 8 seasons, his career high is 47 points, which was 18/19 season. Hasn't put up more than 32 points since and he can't seem to stay healthy. 2.75 isn't a whole lot of money, but for a cap strapped team like the Oilers, I'd use that money elsewhere.

For this price I'm not overvaluing, Bourgault is a good prospect but doesn't fit our window at all and because of that is of very little use for us (imo).
I also don't think XB gets a large return at this point, we maybe get some brownie points from MTL cause he's from Quebec but anywhere else I doubt he gives us a big return.

Hymans career high before coming to Edmonton was 41 points, also back in 18/19.
Not saying Anderson is going to have a massive boom like Hyman did but valuing a player's stats when that player is in a bad/unfavourable system isn't the best way to gauge their worth.

How I see it, which I get you may disagree with, we trade XB for a guy who could potentially come into our system, be a good physical presence and *potentially* start putting up ~50 points a season.
This player would also be at 2.75 for 3 years, ending when they are 32 which is when the real regression in his play would start.
If MTL considers a trade like this and I'm Holland, I jump on it ASAP.

Fair! Everyone has different perspectives of what their team's should do, please don't take my statement below as devaluing your position I am just outlining my thoughts.

I would think MTL (given their situation and current state of rebuilding) would rather the 2 young 20-year-olds as they would fit the window better (2-3 years out...ish...?).
I don't think Anderson helps you now, don't see the value in keeping him, not like you're gunna re-sign him.
Picks in 2024 or 2025 (especially low picks cause no non-playoff team is taking Anderson) aren't going to help for ~4-6 years if at all.
