Description
I am happy Nylander will be a Leaf for his career, he's a great player, but the fact is Aho, Tkachuk and Pastrnak are all better players getting paid less, and they've signed within the last 6 months to a year and a half. Those are his comparables. Yes, the cap is rising, but we've known it was rising for a year now and those players negotiated with that knowledge too.

So why couldn't Nylander sign for a little less to help the Leafs out? Why couldn't Matthews take a little less as well? Together they could have saved the Leafs 1-2 million. That's not insignificant. That's a good 4th liner, a veteran back up, a decent depth piece.

I think Matthews set the wrong culture with his contracts both times and the other elite players like Nylander and Marner followed suit. And that decision has roster reverberations throughout the line up.

I don't think this team can ice a competitive roster to win a cup. Their defense is trash. Their goaltending can't be relied on. The fact is not only does this core make too much money but they play too soft in the playoffs. They don't have the clutch factor. They can't drag a team to victory like MacKinnon or Tkachuk. They don't have a physical leader like those two. But, what do they provide in abundance is entertainment. Goals. They are a fun team to watch.

But Leafs fans don't expect a cup with this core. Let's just learn to enjoy the regular season. This is a team worth watching.

This is a really misinformed view.

Re: Tkachuk
A $9.5M salary in Florida = $5,798,410 take home salary after tax.
A $11.5M salary in Ontario = $5,376,700 take home salary after tax

Re: Pastrnak
Both have very similar deals. Nylander is $0.25M more and the cap will be $4.5M more in the season his contract starts than Pastrnak.
Pastarnak was coming off a 40 goal and 77 point season and was in the middle of what became a 60 goal 113 point season when he signed.
Nylander is coming off 40 goals and 87 points and is on pace for 46 goals and 119 point season.

Re: Aho
Carolina shouldn't be used as a comparison their owner is super cheap. Rob Brind'Amour was being paid the lowest salary of any coach at $600k till his last contract expired and they only brought him up to $1.8M despite being seen as a top coach. From what I can find the only lower paid coach is Luke Richardson at $1.5M. When your owner's position is leave or take less, some leave and some take less. They have stall at under $3M, its just absurd.

All that being said, the fundamental problem has always been Marner. $11M for Tavares as a UFA was fair, SJ was offering $13M, he's been a PPG player the whole deal, it's a great contract. Matthews could have taken less but he isn't horribly overpaid. The issue was $11M for Marner. He should have been at $8M, if he had been then Nylander wouldn't have started this negtiation by saying "I want more than Marner".

The tax point doesn't hold water. Leafs are handing out American dollars via bonuses on July 1st every year.

Regarding Pastrnak, he has a Rocket in his trophy bag, and was one of the premier goal scorers in the league when he signed his contract. Scoring wingers get paid more. Nylander has only 1 40 goal season in his career. Pastrnak has 3. He's the better player, no question.

Look, I'm not trying to say this is a bad day for Leafs fans, it's great Nylander will be back and he will continue to get better imo. I just don't like the culture that Matthews, Marner and Nylander have set. Ego and greed drives this team. And teams like that don't win.
