Need for need

Created by: simonveilleux
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 16, 2024
Published: Jan. 16, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In the last few years, the Sabres have drafted several promising forwards (Rosen, Ostlund, Benson, Petterka, Quinn, Kulich, Savoie), but few defensemen. On the other side, the Canadiens have drafted many defensemen and few forwards. A trade would therefore make sense for both teams.

Jayden Struble is increasingly establishing himself as a top 6, even top 4 defenseman depending on the team. His calm play and physical presence will make him a reliable defenseman for years to come. Ostlund, on the other hand, had a good WJC but remains a prospect with no NHL experience.

I believe that such a trade would be interesting for both parties and would help stabilize each of the teams.

Would probably still pass if I were the Sabres. I get the logic here, but if mittelstadt is a winger long term and Krebs doesn't pan out, they're going to need ostlund as cost controlled centre.

But most say Ostlund won't be a Center in the NHL, he's too small for that role.
Kulich might fit the bill better for the Sabres, I think he's one of your futur star centers.

Im not a Sabres fan so no real stake in this but its an intriguing idea. I dont think Kulich will be a C given what I've read on here but who knows. The size issue for positions is basically dead. Players of all heights and weights can play any position in this league now as long as they can keep up. Ostlund appears to read the game really well, especially without the puck. That's usually indicative of someone who can be a center long term.

I don’t think the Habs want to have Struble in the same division. He won’t be easy to play against.
