I wouldn't even do it then, maybe if you removed both Kovacevic and Xhekaj but even then it's a lot of insignificant peices for a top 6 center.

Bains is the #5 Canuck prospect and has been ranked just outside the top 100 prospects in the league. I'd put his value at about a 2nd. He's 23 and has 36 points in 36 AHL games. If it weren't for Vancouver's gluttony of talented wingers, he'd be playing in the show right now. (source for top 100: https://thehockeywriters.com/nhl-top-100-prospects-ranking/)

Klimovich has fallen off due to injuries this season. Still has some value, about a 5th/6th.

So it was essentially;

Monahan @ 50%
Kovacevic
Xhekaj

for

Bains (2nd)
2nd
3rd
Klimovich (5th)

@GuyGuyGuy countered with removing Xhekaj, so I'd counter with

Monahan @ 50%
Kovacevic

for

Bains (2nd)
3rd
Karlsson (3rd) - 25 points in 28 AHL games, 24 y/o, split time with VAN this season.

2 2nd's a 3rd and a 5th isn't enough for Monahan alone, it will cost a 1st + 3rd for him, Kovacevic for a 3rd is fair, Xhekaj is simply not on the market

What Kent Hughes asks for and what he ends up getting are two different things. a 2nd + 3rd is pretty fair value for a guy like Monahan given his injury history and level of play in the seasons prior. I know that Hughes has stated the price is a 1st, but it often comes in lower than that.

Take for example Horvat last season. The Canucks ask for him was a 1st + blue-chip prospect + U25 roster player. The Canucks ended up having to retain 25% and take a 25+ cap dump dump back instead of the U25 roster player.

Or, better yet, Max Domi. Very similar situation to Monahan; struggled seasons prior, signed a 1-year deal, and produced well (better than Monahan). Chicago's ask was a high draft pick + mid-round pick (just like Hughes). They ended up only getting a 2nd for him.

I don’t think Bains gets a second. He is undrafted and he doesn’t bring something unique to the table. I would value him as a high third. Kovacevic for him make sense for both side. As for Monahan, the reported ask (and the expected return) is a first or a second and a prospect. I think the prospect has to be a pretty good one. I personnally value Klimovich as a B prospect so him and a second for Monahan would be good. It will probably depend on what the other teams offer, but I would be happy enough with that trade

Okay, I can appreciate that ask, I think Bains is still higher value, so I'd sub him for the 2nd and keep Karlsson. 2025 2nd + Klimovich + Karlsson for Monahan @ 50% and Kovacevic.

Yeah, that might work. It just depends on other teams and how much Hughes like Klimovich
