I'm a huge fan of Tanev personally. It's worth a shot if you're Edmonton.

Soup, 2024 1st, Akey and Bourgault...that is awfully tempting.
    ChiHawk liked this.

It's contextual to the situation with Chicago as a whole. Rotation of D partners with all being rookies, the team as a whole isn't controlling the puck, Chicago is spending most of it's time in the D zone and therefore has more shots against than 30 teams in the NHL, etc. It's impossible to individualize performance, even using advanced stats, and draw a conclusion around individual performances without heavily relying on the eye test with a garbage team....almost everyone looks bad on Chicago. In other words, put someone like Murphy on the 2nd line in Edmonton paired up with Ekholm and you'd watch Murphy shine in that role as the hard hitting lock down defender he is.

I'm not going to suggest he's a 1st liner, but he's a very good #3 or #4 pairing for a team looking for a physical stay at home defender that happens to be caught in a very bad situation in Chicago that is dragging his stats and advanced metrics down much further then they should be. Watch him game and game out and watch how he's having to cover for his partner because the rookie is out of position, be it Kaiser, Korchinski or Philips. That is also why he's also valuable to Chicago because he's helping to teach the rookies and coach them. I want Murphy to get traded simply because he deserves more as a player. When Chicago was still trying to compete and he had veterans playing with him, he was very good. Example; when he was paired with McCabe, Murphy was playing incredibly well and easily outshining McCabe who's a decent vet in his own right. That should speak volumes comparing him than and now and watching the different role he has to play today versus than. Edmonton, or most playoff teams, don't need their defenders to cover or play the role of 2 players like he often needs to in chicago.
