I like Buch, WAY too much for him. Bunting is 5 months younger, so it's not like this makes the Canes younger. Buch has 7 more points, so it's not like it's a drastic improvement, Bunting has the extra year of term too. I'd straight up argue Bunting is the more valuable piece right now, due to the extra year. You want Carolina to add Morrow and a 1st? That's delusional

Not saying the trade is fair, I probably would replace bunting with a shorter term dump. However I would say it is a stretch to say Bunting is a more valuable trade piece. Buchnevich is one of the best defensive wingers in league and has been a ppg for the past 3 seasons combined. His lower production this year is more a reflection of the teams offense being down as a whole. Bunting has never been a ppg player in his life. Buch is a first line player, while Bunting is a middle six.

Bunting's been a 1st line player the last 2 years in Toronto, playing with Matthews and Marner. Not saying he is as good as Buch, but to say he's middle six is a probably false. He's a top six winger.

Buchnevich has been good, but this year, he's having a down offensive year. He's fine defensively, but he's not one of the best in the NHL among wingers, not from an analytical standpoint. He's very good, and way above average, but there are wingers way better defensively than Buch. His less term and higher cap hit for a guy with minimally more production just isn't a good deal.

That is fair. I would put Bunting more in the category of a guy like Ivan Barbashev for the Knights. He is more of the third guy on a top 6 line. I was probably a little harsh on Bunting.

If Buch played with Matthews and Marner, he would put up 100 pts. Ok if you don’t like the deal but Buch will sign for almost double what Bunting got annually when he is a FA after next season.

He played with Kreider and Zibanejad and didn't do that... Bunting's on a 60 point pace playing mostly 4th line minutes because the Canes wings are full. Buch is having a down year and that hurts his value. As I said, as of right now, Bunting's probably the more valuable asset because of the extra year of control at a lower cap hit when the difference in production is negligible.

Ok. The Blues as a whole are not good this year. Buch's value has increased substantially since playing for the Blues. Every Rangers fan think it's the worst trade they ever made hence they are hesitant to give up any young guys. Buch will get $8M per when he signs his next deal - Bunting just got $4.5M.

If you think any Ranger fan thinks that's the worst deal they have ever made, you need to go and look up the Brad Park trade and reconsider. Stop talking out of your backside.

Buchnevich will make more than Bunting, I have no doubt. But paycheck does not mean better player. Auston Matthews is about to become the highest paid player in the league, is he better than McDavid? No. Parayko makes 6.5, and he's not better than someone like Slavin who makes 5.3. Buchnevich, if he has another season like this next year, won't make 8 either. He'll make closer to 6, which with the adjusted cap percentage, will be around the same as what Bunting got, but Bunting also got it in a lower tax state. It's why this conversation about "oh he'll make more" is stupid. I hope Buch makes as much as he can, I really do. That doesn't mean he has more value than Bunting right now.
