To trade or not to trade Kakko

Created by: Finski
Team: 2023-24 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 31, 2024
Published: Jan. 31, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Kakko will never become the force of nature player we had hoped for when we drafted him 2nd overall in 2019. However, he has managed to evolve his game into a hyperdefensive forward. I still believe that he can become a 25+ Goal Scorer (50-60 point player).

Pros for trading: The rangers get rid of him and can get some pieces back or use him to acquire someone, and Kakko can flourish under some other system. So it may be in the best interest in Kakko's career to get traded.

Cons: Rangers get another MASSIVE gap on the RW. Kakko can slot into the top 6, but he has found himself a very comfy and productive home on the 3rd line having Cuylle on his off side. If the Rangers trade Kakko the question is who slots into his place? I believe that it is not in the best interest of the Rangers to trade Kakko, especially not knowing how Othmann will react to the NHL, or what the top 6 will look like without him in the lineup.

At least he has a spot on the right side. Othmann on the other hand has no spot unless cuylle becomes a 4th liner

Timing is key

They jettisoned Andersson early and got good return, waited on Kravtsov and got a lousy return.

They moved Brendl early, got a good player back, waited on Jessiman, got zilch.

Moved Sanguinetti early enough to get a return. They waited too long on Lundmark.

Traded Malhotra when still had value, waited too long on McIlrath.

(Maybe get an earlier start on moving Othmann now)

But Kakko is not a bust. Bust means a player who cannot play. Kakko has proven to be a very good player defensively, and has a great attitude.

I wouldn’t mind trading Othmann for the correct needs of the team, but the organization has shown they aren’t very smart

Othmann has no place on the LW unless Cuylle becomes a 4th liner and he doesn’t seem that good 5v5 so far in the AHL

they would prob just move him like laf. he also just doesn't seem like that great of a prospect to me just seems like a decent mid 6 forward

I mean Lavi had the chance to do it when he was up, but kept othmann and cuylle as LW. So I don’t think so

Still doesn’t help that othmann isn’t playing RW in the AHL either lol. If they’re serious about him making the lineup he would be trying to switch to RW

I didn’t say he was a “bust”… but if they are going to sell him, sometimes it pays to do it early.
