Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 7, 2024
Published: Feb. 7, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. 2024 2nd round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
Brodie has clearly lost a step but brining him in here to play on the 3rd pair in limited minutes he could be an amazing role player. Leafs just haven't given up on him as a 1st pairing guy which he clearly isn't anymore.

For the cost of downgrading a late 2nd to a 5th, its a good gamble for Dallas.
DAL
  1. Brodie, TJ ($2,500,000 retained)
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (NYI)
  3. 2024 5th round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Leafs 3rd used to get another team to retain another $1.25M. So Dallas gets him at $1.25M
2.
TOR
  1. Andersson, Rasmus
Additional Details:
I know that Calgary fans will say he isn't available. Per Sportsnet, the Flames would consider it for the right offer, and they compared it to the Hronek deal last year. The Flames' window is in 3-4 years, when Andersson will need a new deal. It makes sense to move him now and get assets that fit that timeline.

This deal does that. Timmins is a stopgap for this season and next. Robertson jumps into the lineup and can be a top 6 guy for the next 7+ years. (Surprisingly, Robertson would be 2nd in Points Per Game on the Flames after this trade despite averaging 4th line time at 10:55 per game)

Niemela is expected to be a top 4 RHD (likely a second-pairing guy; that top-line potential seems gone).

1st is a chance for the Flames to add another prospect to the pool.

All of this for three years of a player, during which they aren't going to be overly competitive.

It seems like the right time to trade him and the right price to justify the move.
3.
TOR
  1. Goodrow, Barclay ($1,141,667 retained)
  2. Kakko, Kaapo
NYR
  1. Domi, Max
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
NYR get their 3rd line center and move off of Goodrow.

A buyout would be:

Year 1 - Save $247,222
Year 2 - $1,002,778
Year 3 - $3,502,778
Year 4 to 6 - $1,111,111

So this cuts the last 3 years of retention + saves NYR from that one year at $3.5M.
4.
TOR
  1. Maroon, Patrick
  2. 2026 7th round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
Minnesota is thin on D so this just gets them another body + McMann is someone who can replace Maroon longterm in the bottom 6
5.
TOR
  1. Seeler, Nick
Additional Details:
Not sure how much sense this makes but with Hart out, it seems like a deal that should work for both teams. Leafs get a DFD and the Flyers get a veteran goalie who can play league average.

No way the Flyers do that deal, they don't need a goalie and there is a chance they might get a 2nd round pick for Seeler if they move him

This is very good.

Flyers trade only happens if they think they can make the playoffs. Even then Leafs likely add a 5th.

But otherwise value is really good. Well reasoned.

Seeler won't fetch a 2nd. If Luke Schenn playing top line minutes last year only got a 3rd and Flames are asking a 2nd for Tanev then Seeler is getting a 3rd max.

I'm not saying they will get a 2nd, I think a 3rd plus another pick or prospect is more likely. But Seeler is playing the most minutes in his career and playing very well. Plus the defenseman market is a little thin.

Go recheck your Robertson stats, he's averaging just under .5 points per game, the Flames have 11 players averaging over that. The flames don't have a roster spot for Robertson.

Fair enough. I wouldn't be shocked if he got like a 3rd and 5th like Zadorov. He's hugely underrated IMO. Pretty physical great defensively. He just hasn't shown he can play well against top lines.

Rangers pass. They’ll keep Kakko and buyout goodrow

And Domi is barely an upgrade over brodzinski if even at all

Those stats might be wrong but a Robertson trade makes loads of sense for Calgary. It also makes a Coleman/Mangiapane trade easier for the Flames. Since they have more cap space and a roster player so they can retain and take picks.

If they did this trade them moved Coleman for a 1st and 3rd they will have picked up 4 A/A- young assets for two guys might not contribute when the team is competitive.

Buyout would be a massive mistake.

They would have a $3.5M cap hit in the season when Cuytle, Laf and Miller all need new deals with Panarin still on the books.

A buyout helps next season, is 100k less the year after then could cost them a great young player in the third year then there are three more years that you wouldn't have with retention. It's just a horrible decision. It be shocked if they do it.

The flames are set on LW for the foreseeable future. Hubey isn't going anywhere, zary is in talks for the Calder, and we just got pelletier back. So where does he fit in? Only spot for him is the 4th line.

Panarin is off the books the season NY has the 3.5 million cap penalty.

Lol to be fair I only know this because I made a trade of him and a 2nd to the flames the other day for future considerations.

If we trade Maroon, it's going to be for a pick. Maroon for a 5th sounds fine.
