Flames aren’t retaining but I like the trades

Flames were willing to retain in the previous Tanev and Zadorov deal had in place with Calgary.

But it fell through because we wanted retention

Flyers aren't giving that Ducks 2nd back....that could be a very high 2nd. Would basically be a Robertson for Laughton trade which Philly wouldn't do.

Craig Conroy was never willing to retain on Nikita Zadorov, Hence why he was traded to Vancouver for no retention and not Toronto.

Why would the flames not be willing to retain? If they can get their price without retention they would do that first. But they would surely benefit a lot from retaining on Hanifin and/or Tanev.

I know the front office has a history of not retaining, but I think the Zadorov trade may have been more "lets save our 3 retention spots for future trades" as opposed to were not going to retain. I get the feeling Conroy will retain if it gets him the best package back. That said, this package isnt gonna get it done (with retention)... the return will need to start with a first at this point imo. +

Why wouldn't they? hes better and younger and makes less money

In an already crowded middle-six, he either has to distinguish himself as a top six forward, otherwise he's not going to be utilized enough to make the trade worth it. Doesn't make sense to move a center for a winger given how scarce available centers are on relatively cheap deals.
