This would never happen but would be insanely epic

Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 23, 2024
Published: Feb. 23, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This isn't as unrealistic as it may seem. The value going back to Calgary likely isn't adequate (probably have to add one of Minten or Cowan, at least), and I think it's certain to say that they would not be happy to retain on Mangiapagne, especially given how valuable their retention slots are for this TDL. But perhaps getting a third party to retain on Tanev would make this more feasible.

Either way, I think Mangiapgne would be an instant upgrade over Robertson and would be a perfect fit on that McMann-Tavares line. Getting him at that cap hit for at least another full season would also be incredible. I don't think I need to explain why Tanev would be the perfect defenceman for this team. His only downside is his age, but I think he's the kind of player that can still provide this level, even into his late 30s. He's pretty much peaked over his last 3-4 seasons in Calgary. If age hasn't slowed him down yet, who's to say he can't keep this up for at least another 2 years?

In short, I think this trade is very improbable, but would essentially fill exactly what this team needs. From being a wildcard team, this trade would establish us as a legitimate cup contender.

Let me know what you think the return could be for a trade like this to actually happen.

I don’t understand the Leafs. You’re not going to have this core forever. If there is a move that can make them legit cup contenders, make it. Everyone pick and prospect should be on the table.

I mean, Nylander Marner and Matthews may actually be here for their entire career.

Every competitive team should have everything on the table, but you also need to assess the bigger picture: what's actually going to help your team have the best chance of winning a cup, regardless if that's this year, next year, or the year after. I think there's a very valid argument not to spend our first-round pick this year, especially if that player isn't going to be with us beyond this season. This is because next year will have a loaded 2024 FA class, and we'll have an ample amount of cap space to make our team better/deeper than it's ever been (assuming Treliving doesn't screw it up). Minten, Knies, Woll, Cowan (if he makes the team), Holmberg,

Although it's kind of difficult to explain, I think there is a good reason to argue that by not spending our first-round pick this year, we're putting ourselves in a better chance to win the Cup next season, where we'll presumably be a better team and in a better position to win the Cup. Personally, unless a trade like this comes up, I think we should stand pat at the deadline and just let this team play the way Florida did last year.

A) You're right, the value isn't there for Calgary.
B) If there was Cowan, it would help
C) CGY wouldn't retain on Mangiapane, so there would need to be a cap dump coming back
D)Mangiapane would light it up on Toronto's top 6 IMO
E) Goaltending needs to be addressed.
