I don’t understand the Leafs. You’re not going to have this core forever. If there is a move that can make them legit cup contenders, make it. Everyone pick and prospect should be on the table.
I mean, Nylander Marner and Matthews may actually be here for their entire career.
Every competitive team should have everything on the table, but you also need to assess the bigger picture: what's actually going to help your team have the best chance of winning a cup, regardless if that's this year, next year, or the year after. I think there's a very valid argument not to spend our first-round pick this year, especially if that player isn't going to be with us beyond this season. This is because next year will have a loaded 2024 FA class, and we'll have an ample amount of cap space to make our team better/deeper than it's ever been (assuming Treliving doesn't screw it up). Minten, Knies, Woll, Cowan (if he makes the team), Holmberg,
Although it's kind of difficult to explain, I think there is a good reason to argue that by not spending our first-round pick this year, we're putting ourselves in a better chance to win the Cup next season, where we'll presumably be a better team and in a better position to win the Cup. Personally, unless a trade like this comes up, I think we should stand pat at the deadline and just let this team play the way Florida did last year.
