Blues deadline

Created by: Beauterham
Team: 2023-24 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 5, 2024
Published: Mar. 5, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
St.Louis goes into sell-mode.

The Hayes trade:
The Rangers get bottom 6 center upgrades and dumping Goodrows terrible contract but gives up a couple of promising prospects and picks doing so.
St.Louis adds a 2nd and (a future) 3rd round pick + get some prospects with NHL-upside in Chmelar, Robertsson and Sykora. The Blues are probably retooling for another 2/3 seasons before coming competitive again, the Goodrow contract expires when, hopefully, our next window of opportunity opens. Goodrow's final year, after paying his signing bonus, his actual salary is a lot lower than his caphit which puts him in a niche where he might be easy to trade to a team that needs to hit the minimal caphit but where the owner wants to pay as little as possible (for reference, see the Arizona/Ottawa Derek Stepan trade).

After these trades the team is in 'perfect shape' to go for a top-10 overall pick this season.

Just wondering, is the price too high to dump Goodrow, not interested in taking back Hayes? If the first is the case, how would you change it?

The Rangers actually make money buying out Goodrow next season and save money buying him out for the rest of their cup window. There's zero incentive for them to really pay anything more than like a late 3rd to send him away.

Hayes plays a pretty slow pace that doesn't really work in Lavi's quick counter style system. Beyond that, the market value for what he provides is not particularly high, again we're talking like a late 3rd/4th presuming half retention.

The sort of player that honestly makes sense for the team are good transitional guys that don't cost a ton. Where guys like Mika struggle is in transition so bringing high volume transition guys who can play C/W like Roslovic or Danforth makes sense.
Similar thing in the bottom 6. Bringing up Stankoven-lite Brett Berard should've been done months ago.
