How low will he go

Created by: NMAvsFan
Team: 2024-25 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 10, 2024
Published: Mar. 10, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I know what he was reportedly asking for before the trade but I have to wonder if Mitts takes a little less money for long-term security and to be on a winner. Avs go long to get the AAV down and give him full near-term trade protection (NMC for years 1-3) then allow for some flexibility later on (M-NTC for years 4-8). Traded Manson to make space but the alternative is to trade Lehkonen which would bring back a good return but be a big loss. The reasoning there is that it's easier to replace a wing than an RD but Lehky just does too many things well to feel comfortable trading him.

Additional Details:
No idea who would be on his M-NTC but I'm assuming he wants to stay out West so I picked a team with cap space and a need on the right next season.

I feel like they’re going to make Mittelstadt sign like a 8 x $5,500,000 or so

I can't imagine he signs for less than $6.5M but if they can get him down below that, it would be great. The Avs don't have a ton of leverage; Mitts has arb rights and only one year to UFA so he can demand more.

I mean, if they hit him with like a ‘hey man don’t you want to play with MacKinnon Rantanen & Makar for the rest of your career?’

I feel like that there can get guys to take a decent ‘pay cut’

That's kind of what we're banking on here. If he's looking for $50M in total compensation, that gets him to $6.25M AAV which is a little less than market value for a 2C but is still solid and helps them ice a competitive team.

Ivan won’t be NHL ready by next year imo, I would really hope they could get Mittlestadt done for a little less and not have to mess around with guys like Hakanpaa and Kulikov and keep Manson.

Definitely hope they can get him closer to $6M but I'm not sure if that's going to be possible. You're on record a saying Lehkonen would be the guy you would trade then pick up someone else. Would you simply re-sign Drouin or go looking for someone else in UFA and who would that be? Of course, if Landy can't come back, that changes things but I think we should operate off the assumption he will at least give it a go next season.

I think 6.5 is way way too much for him, yes he is good but he is also having a career year. He has signed bridge deals for his past deal so yes he might be looking to cash in but it goes back to the hey take a little less so we can be really good. I don't know another situation in the league where it is better than the one he's in now
