Actual ReTool

Description
Obviously the difficult part of doing something like this that the buyout is before ensuring you could land free agents. Either way, it would be good for both parties to move on from Krug and I don't see the feasibility of a trade, even at 50% (i.e. paying to dump him on a bad team would get vetoed and good teams can add a PP 3rd pair guy for under 3.25 and 3 yr term).

I think Hanifin ends up in TB and I'm sure there will be teams lining up to sign Roy that are more enticing than STL, but this would be an actual retool vs what I call "Doug's Silent Rebuild".

Ideally, Dvorsky and Dean can take the 2C and 3C spots over the course of the next couple of seasons and provide some impact on their ELCs. Should also have some more defensemen in the pool if they do things right.

Roy is a good dman but I don’t see the point in teams paying him more than $4 mil; he’s a #3 dman at best. Ideally the Blues trade Leddy and buy out Krug which wouldn’t hurt as bad as people think. I’d like to think Alexandrov’s time is up. Finding a partner for Parayko and adding 1 or 2 secondary scoring wingers along with moving 1-3 big contracts should be Army’s offseason goals.

Honestly, I'd rather trade for or offer sheet Broberg than spend all that on Hanifin. Maybe it's just me.

Roy is a good 2nd pairing Dman and that contract would be larcenous. The issue is he can probably do better.

Iam against buyout. Points wise he is more than decent. Just wait another year and trade him at 50 retention. Better trade both Faulk and krug in same year of their M-NTC. And everybody saying defence is a problem, Iam tired of hearing it. In my opinion offence is a bigger problem check shots stats, and few teams who above blues in standings have worse GA but their GF helped him negate this problem.

I just don't see the trade market for Krug but no doubt trading him at 50% is an easier solution than the lengthy buyout. Maybe after another year is gone and the term is less of an issue, but I'd rather move on ASAP and try to find a better all-around dman to plug into the top4.

Plenty of blame to go around and it is definitely a nuanced topic. Effective defensemen spend less time defending and improve the transition game which can make it easier on forwards to generate more offense. Effective forwards backcheck responsibly and prevent odd man rushes by being responsible on the puck. When the team doesn't play as a five man unit, hard to place the blame on either group. But once you have enough data to look at, I'd say it's the Blues' inability to get out of their zone that causes the most problems. Poor puck decisions, lack of confidence to make the best play, costly turnovers. They spend way too much time in their zone and it ruins a lot of shifts and chances to gain momentum.

The bigger point, though, is that the forward group is already going to change over the next couple of years with the younger guys coming in and hopefully moving some of the veteran guys down the lineup. The defense is going to remain the same mediocre group unless something drastic is done.
