Description
Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts (timestamp 59:54 starts Tampa segment):
"If Hanifin had a total NTC instead of a partial one, he ends up in Tampa".
"I heard Tampa was really disappointed they didn't get Hanifin, that was a guy they wanted and thought they were going to get".

It sounds like both Hanifin and Tampa wanted to make the deal happen and it was reported by Kyper and Bourne that Tampa had an extension worked out if they did trade for Hanifin so they would have a plan if he hit FA or if they traded for his signing rights. I can't see anyway that both Hanifin and Stamkos fit on the team unless they trade both Sheary and Jeannot or Stamkos takes a big discount. Its possible Hanifin changes his mind after spending time in Vegas but then the question becomes which 2 out of the 3 will Vegas be keeping out of Marchessault, Stephenson and Hanifin? In terms of next year Vegas has 3 LD: Hague, McNabb, and Hutton, 2 RD: Pietrangelo, and Whitecloud and lastly Theodore who can play on both sides but is left handed. They also have Cormier(LD) and Korczak(RD) who have decent chances of making the team next year. That is a total of 8 defenseman without Hanifin. On forward they have Barbashev, Eichel, Stone, Hertl, Karlsson, Howden, Roy, Kolesar, and Cotter signed for next year. They also have Brisson, Morozov, Dorfeyev and possibly Morelli might be on the team next year although I won't add him. That is 12 forwards without resigning Marchessault or Stephenson. At the end of the day Vegas doesn't really have a glaring need at offense or defense next season so it will probably come down to who plays the best for them down the stretch and which of them are willing to take the most team friendly deals or want to stay there as they will not have the cap for all 3. I am also assuming that Lehner will still be on LTIR all of next season but tbh I haven't really followed that situation too closely so if he is able to return then they would only be able to keep 1 of the 3.

It would prolly be more term for Stammer if he's signing for that low and LTIRetirement for the last 3 years of it

Haven't seen Jeannot play in a while, what's his prob been?

AFP analytics has stammer's projected cap hit at $6,304,375 for 3 years and when you factor in the no state income tax and the fact that he wants to stay in tampa I think 5.5 at that term is pretty reasonable. They could do something like 8 years and he doesnt play out the end of the contract but I figured I might as well make it 5 because he said he wanted to play 5 more years and I wanted to make it fair. Jeannot just makes too much money for the bottom 6 and him and Sheary are the only tradeable assets that could be moved to make space for Hanifin.

And we know that whatever analytics says always comes true, right? There's never a bidding war, even when a player "wants to stay" which is in like 95% of statements of players who end up leaving their team

Vegas doesn't make this deal if they don't think they can extend Hanafin. They're not gonna trade him.

How many of this 95% have played 15 years with 10 as Captain of the team in a state with no income tax and if not the best a top 2-3 ownership group in the league? How many of that 95% also have stated more times than you can count he wants to be the first career long player on that team? How many have turned down a much bigger payday to stay than leave?

They paid a rental price. They can think they will extend him, but Hanifin seems more interested in playing close to home/the east coast. If he makes it clear to Vegas that he won't extend with them, them getting a 3rd rd pick for just his signing rights is quite a good return.
