An interesting 24-24

Created by: Ennis
Team: 2024-25 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 16, 2024
Published: Mar. 17, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Dubas is doing as he should. Selling off players and trying to make the oldest team in the league younger.

Washington has it right. Mesh young players into the old core for an eventual seamless transition. Guys like McMichael, Lapierre, Sandin, Protas, Miroshnichenko and eventually Leonard will be looking great in years to come.

I don't think Pittsbugh should immediately tank in 24-25, but I think the team should still look to get younger. The recipe of aiming for young players/rookies rather than stockpiling draft picks is a better look. Trying to build a wildcard team to give the old core 1 final 'hoorah' shouldn't be the plan, no matter how much Crosby whines about it.

DISCLAIMER: Just hypothetical trades. Ideally, some trades where you get picks you'd try to get young roster players.

DISCLAIMER X2: I also know I'm using more than 3 retention slots. Not all trades have to happen, it's just a hypothetical for each.

Canucks pass. Cant see them moving Pod for Reilly Smith, when we can barely afford him

I picked Pod because he's a young player who hasn't really panned out. Just an idea of someone Pittsburgh can target.

Reilly Smith is unfortunately going to be on this team starting next season barring some miracle where Dubas learns about buyouts.

That is a garbage return for Pettersson who has been the only d-man who has a pulse in his own end this year.

Trading him isn't an option.

Podkolzin hasn't been incredible overall but he's been solid since being called up. He's a Tocchet type player who can play physical along the boards and win battles. He praised Podkolzin in the media the other day talking about how much better his defensive reads have gotten. Given that he's a cheap, young, cost-controlled player I don't see any reason to move him unless its for an equivalent young C or RHD.

The chance to move Smith to VAN was last week.

It also doesn't make a lot of sense for the Wild to spend assets on their position of least need. They have Brodin and Middleton for their top 4 LHD next year and can rotate some of their prospects in on the 3rd pair to see if any of them sticks. Merrill is fine enough if none of them stick for another year that they're not likely to be doing much of anything with all that dead cap.
