That's a terrible trade for PIT. Karlsson is probably break even value at $8m and starts getting valuable at $7m. He's probably only waiving his NMC to go to a team near top contender status too given the disaster of waiving for PIT has turned into for him. He's still a mid/low end 1D and easily a capable top pairing RD with a good partner. Just overpaid.

Why would the Kings want one year of Brandon Tanev, who will turn 33 before New Year's Day? Los Angeles has plenty of bottom-6 forward possibilities internally.

yeah good point, maybe without retention SEA can get this done! they certainly will have the cap space for 2-3 years with all their prospects being on great contracts!

4 of your bottom 6 guys have contracts ending in 2024. he fits the culture and they will have the cap space. IMO theyll need solid vet like him

One of our bottom 6 guys has a contract ending in 2024 -- Trevor Lewis.

The average age of the Kings under contract for next season is just under 29 years, and that will rise the moment Los Angeles signs the two goalies that will be needed, so the idea that the Kings need a "solid vet" is mis-informed.

Tanev has a cap hit of $3.5 million. Contrary to your belief, the Kings are not rolling in cap space, and that sum would be far better spent on 3 or 4 players for multiple seasons than on one season of a 33-year-old veteran who has been on the IR list twice this season. In fact, that $3.5 million would be far better spent on re-signing fourth-line center Blake Lizotte and another bottom-6 forward.

good points- definitely cant dispute some of this.
I think we can agree to disagree on Tanev's fit though. I think LA has a great fit for Tanev. He would be a great fit on the 3/4 line, even after the addition of a goalie. Perhaps the money would be better spent on Roy or a reliable Dman that plays more mins than Tanev, but i dont think the idea is too farfetched.

..but this quote is objectively wrong. Arvidsson, Lewis, Kaliyev, Liz are all due for new contracts next year. You may be watching more than me but CF's depth chart says those 4 are in the bottom 6

Kaliyev and Lizotte are RFAs (and together they won't cost $3.5 million). An RFA doesn't need to be replaced if you want to keep him. Arvidsson is a top-6 forward who is off the roster due to injury; the qualitative difference between him and Tanev is gigantic.

Take another look at the Kings' cap situation next season. CF notes that LA currently has $22.5 million in cap space against an $87.5 million ceiling. That's for 12 roster players. I'll be overjoyed if only half of that is required to re-sign Quint Byfield and Matt Roy. That leaves $11 million plus (if we're lucky) for Spence, Lizotte, two goalies of contending-team caliber and some more cheap forwards. Tanev is a luxury we can't afford and even if you take Matt Roy out of the equation, the $3.5 million is better spent elsewhere than on one season of a veteran depth forward.

fair points! Looks like i'd have to agree with not being able to afford him. Those 4 contracts in the bottom 6 wont come cheap...haha

If you “need” Erik Karlsson then why would you think you could get him for an absurd offer such as that?

I dont even like seattle brother just doing some arm chair gm'in! dont really think its an absurd offer. Morrison is a legit prospect (dubas prefers) and the two others are both 60+ point getters an reasonable contracts. Perhaps Seattle would have to take back Rielly smith to make it even?
