Dubas says maybe at the deadline, but ownership won't pay $2m on a player that is already excellent value unless a great return is coming back. And this is not a great return.

Fair, this could potentially wait till the deadline as well if needed. I think NJD should put this offer out now and see. If pitt wants to completely rebuild, such as a scenario where they send Crosby to Colorado or something, I think they'd take this.

In all, we'll see what the price is, but regardless imo NJD should have been making offers this past deadline, this offseason, next deadline, and into UFA on pettersson.

He'd fit great imo as a puck mover, on the PK, and with John Marino

All reporting from both insider Friedman and local reporters is that Crosby is going down with the ship. He'll probably play three more years and retire. Doubt any of the core other than maybe Karlsson gets moved. And Dubas will lie and call it a "re-tool" but it'll be a rebuild with the core. The core isn't nearly good enough to stop a rebuild as we are all seeing this season. Might not be able to tank fully as in bottom 5 consistently, but they'll finish bottom 10 regularly and probably get really bad once Crosby retires. Won't be competitive again until 2030 at the earliest.

Good to know. How likely is Marcus Pettersson to be resigned, and how much would an extension on him cost? My estimation has been around 6 mill x 7 years? Am I too high, too low, or just right on that?

I think that's the most it would cost. I'd personally not do it as he is more of a defensive dman but he can be productive with the right partner. He and Marino are a good matchup defensive pairing that could free up Hamilton's pairing for more O zone deployment.

Luke-Nemec go vroom vroom
Pettersson-Marino shutdown
Siegs-Hamilton offensive role

if you're down 1 you see a lot more of Luke Nemec and Hamilton

If you're up 1 you see a lot more of Siegs Pettersson Marino

Overall they all get about 20 minutes a night on average, changing game to game.

At least that's how I'd play it.

If Pettersson gets to UFA and NJD could get him at 5 mill AAV I would be jumping for joy.

I'd go as high as the severson price for him if I don't have to give up draft capital but who knows what the market looks like. HIm being a lefty probably worsens his market

But anyway just in terms of my valuations for pittsburgh targets

Reilly Smith: 3rd+Sweetener at 50%
Eller: 3rd+sweetener
Acciari: 4th
Jarry: late 1st or equivalent
Pettersson: late 1st+2nd or equivalent unretained, with cost of retention added on
Graves: cap dump, at just under 4 mill he becomes neutral value imo

I don’t think the pens could stomach that in the offseason just due to the retention. If you took out the retention they’d probably do it. Trading him in the offseason with retention just screams rebuild to the core rather than just a deal too good to pass up that also opens up some cap space. And I’d think it’d need to be this high without retention in the offseason too just to convince Dubas and the core it’s too good of a deal to pass on if that makes sense. However if they are out of the playoffs again come deadline, then I could see it for this with retention.

I could also see them try to lock up Pettersson. Since he’s only like one of two defensive defensemen we have and still pretty young.

that's way to much for MP.
He's a 2nd pairing guy.
This year 2nd pairing guys went in the 4-5 million range and by 5 I mean that's the ceiling.
I see him landing a Graves like deal.
Add a slight bump for cap expansion.
I would make this trade if I was the penguins.
They get a young guy now, a 1st and 2nd.
