Summer of Staios

Created by: Celtic
Team: 2024-25 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 25, 2024
Published: Mar. 25, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
MAIN GOAL: the main goal for Steve Staios and company this summer is to add better defensive players, as well gaining players with experience.

SECONDARY GOALS: The secondary goals are to get rid of back contracts. Nearly impossible to do with goaltending so that leaves Chabot on the chopping block. As well as another goal would to get a quality Goaltender, now this would be a main goal, but the goaltender market is looking really tough right now, most quality goaltenders are UFA’s by the end of 2025, that’s a risk that I don’t think Staios will take.

Summary: Only get a goaltender back if and only if we have figured out defence and experience first. Our goaltending is likley to get better with the changes above, so once that is all done, then maybe take a look at goaltending.

To add some things to the Calgary deal, Calgary doesn’t have much leverage with Markstrom, he’s getting older, and has a full NMC, and wants out. Calgary is trying to wait it out to try and get the most value possible, but that usually backfires, hes probably only going to go for a 1st round pick. So that being included covers Markstrom, the rest is dedicated for Weegar. Could be argued as an underpay, but also has a NMC, and probably also wants out, so again less leverage.

Trade Joseph, Acciari or Smith once Norris is ready to come back

  6. 2024 1st round pick (BOS)
  7. 2025 2nd round pick (OTT)
  8. 2025 3rd round pick (FLA)
Additional Details:
Hamonic does not need to be included in this deal, just if Calgary wants to blow things up, there likely going to want some vets to help the young guys in return.

Calgary gets 3 young talented players, who all can blossom into Middle 6 / Top 4 guys for their team. They also get a late first to add another young talent to their prospect pool.

This trade gives depth for the future in Calgary, all guys should become decent NHLer’s, arguably slight overpay for Ottawa. Erik Brannstrom and the first are the key parts of this deal, and for you Calgary fans saying how is Brannstrom a key part of a deal? Look at his underlying stats, he’s been on a 3rd paring for most of the season, and when he does get put in an elevated role, he’s amazing, can quarterback a powerplay like no other. On the market he’s currently worth a 1st for reference.

Also the 3rd could also be a 2nd, depending on if Florida wins the Stanley Cup
2.
OTT
  1. Larsson, Adam
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (TOR)
SEA
  1. Chychrun, Jakob
Additional Details:
Seattle is struggling with scoring goals, but great and keeping the puck out of the net, Ottawa is great with scoring goals but struggles at keep the puck out of the net, perfect hockey trade here. Both players 1 year away from UFA, similar value, both teams gets a need filled.
3.
OTT
  1. 2024 7th round pick (ARI)
4.
OTT
  1. Acciari, Noel
  2. Smith, Reilly ($2,500,000 retained)
  3. 2025 1st round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
2025 1st round pick is top 15 protected
PIT
  1. Chabot, Thomas
  2. 2025 4th round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
Pittsburg is trying to get younger, Ottawa is trying to add experience. Another pretty good hockey trade here. Pittsburg adding Chabot, adds a pretty good offensive Defenceman to their top 4 on the left side, guessing they get rid of Letang soon, thus replaces the offence, as well as getting a younger player.

Pens can't trade the 25 pick. They will most likely keep their pick this draft and 25 goes to SJ.

OTT declines all trades,

OTT has ZERO interest in markstrom, OTT wants long term net stability not for just 2-3 years.

OTT is not going to trade a 25 YO for a 32 YO, chych has more value than larsson

not even close to value for chabot OTT declines

Man, no offence, you guys don’t understand values, and these are great trades for Ottawa, some are underpays, Chabot and Chychrun don’t have the value you think.

PIT cannot trade away the 2025 1st rounder because that currently must go to San Jose as the 2024th 1st rounder is top 10 protected.

Flames laugh and hang up the phone. I wouldn't move Weegar alone for that atrocity.

Yeah, trade young players for good vets. Teams core is still young. The surrounding players are now good experienced players. That’s how winners are built.

Based on the decline of the team, I doubt they will be trading away 1st round picks in the near future again. The Karlsson one is already looking potentially disastrous.

Anyone saying that is an overpay for Ottawa, is either a blind homer, or outright stupid. There is very little in terms of value.

The Bruins pick is by far the best piece and it could easily be #32. Markstrom is worth more than that on his own.
Forsberg and Hamonic are straight up cap dumps. There is nothing particularly inspiring about Bernard-Docker, Brannstrom or Ostapchuk, and a 2nd and a 3rd are just that. It's a whole lot of sizzle and no steak. It doesn't matter ow high you stack you meh assets, it's still a pile of meh
