Blues already have Krug and Perunovich so we have enough LHD for our PP. Matheson is also another 30 year old defensemen to add to our collection of multiple 30 year old defensemen. Matheson to the blues make no sense for a variety of reasons. We are trying to get younger not older

There are other ways to extract value from a player besides trading them.

Using them to set an example for your rookies and younger veterans is another way. Yes you lose them for nothing, but you gain all they were able to teach about being a pro and dealing with tough game situations.

Holding Savard is a great example of this.

Matheson is better than Leddy and Krug but no point to bring him in if those two are here

I’d do Krug and a 3rd for Matheson but Krug declines so it doesn’t matter
