Logical 17-18 Roster

Created by: netminder71
Team: 2017-18 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 21, 2017
Published: Jul. 21, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1) They cannot find anyone willing to take Orpik on. Sucks but it is reality of that terrible deal they made with an old slow player.
2) The young guys need minutes. Wilson needs to mature into a top-6 forward, Vrana needs a long look at wing, Graovac could be a decent checking line center, and I think eventually you've got to give bottom-6 time to Nate Walker and Riley Barber (he's prob 3rd line ready now).
3) Defense is a weak spot, but maybe this is a throw-away year where you develop Djoos, Hobbs, Bowey, and finally dump Orpik with retained money at the deadline. Opens the team up to resign Carlson (or trade him because he has value) and re-vitalize the defense through a younger vet and some of the developed prospects.
4) Eventually Ovi drops to 3LW and you move the younger hands up to 2LW.
5) Guys in the pipeline and finding lots of cap space in 2 years may be a smarter move and give the team a new window. Because even if you're signing a Franson, Campbell, or veteran defenseman this year, they're not much better off...and trading an Eller (the only fwd with value they may consider dealing) you wouldn't get enough value to replace his utility.

Be realistic Caps fans...it is a youth movement, and trying to get mileage out of Orpik, Chorney, Beagle, and fillers like Devante Smith-Pelly...while we pray Kuzy, Oshie, Bura, Backie, and play their assess off.

Makes sense. But Ovechkin's contract is only four more years. There's no reason that someone who has stayed at the top of the game so long won't be a top six player at 35. I'm not expecting him to be Gordie Howe, or anything, but he's been in professional shape for the last fifteen years. Keeping it up for another four so he can sign one more huge contract shouldn't be that big of a challenge for him. It's not like he's going to suddenly forget how to take one-timers, so the only question is whether he keeps his skating up enough to excel at even strength. He may have slipped to 22nd in league scoring last year, but in a league with 31 teams, that still makes him a player every team would like to have on its top line. Of course, I just looked back at the top thirty scorers from four years ago, and ten of them are out of their teams' top six, so anything can happen, but twenty are still key players. I think if he stays healthy, he's still going to be a very good player. http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?aggregate=0&gameType=2&report=skatersummary&pos=S&reportType=season&seasonFrom=20122013&seasonTo=20122013&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&sort=points

Very true....and I'd love for him to be a top line guy to 35 years and beyond. Heck, as a Caps fan, I want him to get back to dominating like he used to. But we know he's been banged up, we know he's prone to long stretches where he gets frustrated, so if he needs to be a 2nd-3rd line threat and go up against the opposition's lesser matchups, then fine. So be it. Do I think Vrana takes his place in top 2 LW spots...but if a trade window opens up, maybe it is someone else. Who knows...as you say...anything can happen!

Why have Beagle on the wing? He's at the top of the league in faceoffs.

Beagle will be our 4C, and the line of 65-19-77 was so good in the playoffs last season, you can't not put them back together. Not to mention the insane amount of chemistry Oshie and Backy have, Burakovsky is the perfect compliment to that line. Also, there is no way that John Carlson and Brooks Orpik is a pairing next season. That was down right awful last season, before Trotz started putting Schmidt/Alzner with Carlson
