Quiet Offseason

Created by: Matt1567
Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 8, 2024
Published: Apr. 8, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- Move a defenseman, likely one of Barron, Harris or Kovacevic to clear up the logjam on the backend
- Re-sign Xhekaj and Barron (if not traded) to bridge deals, make them earn a a big contract in a few years
- Bring in some AHL depth, but guys that can be depth NHLers too if needed
- Sign a 3rd string goalie, someone that can be a starter for Laval and play in the NHL if needed, some unlikely targets could include Matt Murray (TOR) and Chris Driedger, but more likely someone of the Magnus Hellberg or Oskar Dansk esque
- Let Laval load up with prospects for the season and have them try to compete for the Calder cup, don't rush anyone to the NHL
- Draft a forward with our 1st, and BPA for the rest of the draft, too many good prospects is a good problem to have
- Sign Slafkovsky to an 8-year extension before the season (something around 7.5 mil), I think his value is only gonna go up this season, lock up Guhle too for 6-7 mil on a long deal
- Keep the NHL roster the same unless someone wants Anderson or Gallagher without an equally bad contract coming back or paying to dump them, pray for some more health, and don't force anything, let the team develop and see where it takes them, I think a playoff push is possible

  1. Poolman, Tucker
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:

If he's not healthy he can go on LTIR for the year
VAN
  1. Kovacevic, Johnathan
Additional Details:
Canucks get a dman making less than the league minimum that can be a good 6/7 dman while moving salary

Love this strategy. Keep it simple, no big trades for a forward, no FA signings, just let the youth play their way up.

Next season you're likely looking at another top 10 pick to add to the core, they'll have like 20+ million in cap space with limited players to resign and there's a much better FA agent market next season to spend money on

exactly, guys like Dvorak, Armia, Anderson and Gallgher are likely gonna cost us to dump them, but there's no rush to do so, most of our forward prospects are still a year or more away from being ready, and the last thing that we want to have happen is we sign a free agent or a few that end up being in the same boat as Anderson and Gallagher are in now, overpaid with term, and this years FA class for forwards is basically Guentzel, Reinhart, Lindholm, and a bunch of older guys looking to win a cup or get one last big contract, not quite what Montreal need, and while a lot of these guys won't hit the market next summer, Marner, Rantanen, Draisaitl, Crosby, Verhaeghe, Konecny, Boeser, Buchnevich, Sharangovich, Ehlers, etc. are all potential free agents next summer, a way larger group than what's available this year

yeah, I figured he was, but I've seen trades of him being dumped so I wasn't 100% sure. Doesn't really affect the trade, he was mainly a contract spot going to Montreal more than anything

Canucks have a very solid 6/7 and an RD in Noah Juulsen. Canucks nomination for the Masterton. Cant see much interest in Kovacevic. Also, both Cole and Soucy can play the right side too.

the canucks only have 3 of their 8 dmen under contract next season, not saying they won't re-sign guys but having cheap depth is a good thing and Kovacevic is exactly that
