Description
Working a night shift and this random thought came to mind. I'm probably out to lunch with it though.

Why Boston does this?
They gain cap space while getting a top 4 defenseman for cheap. I would expect that it would be very difficult to find a replacement level player at a similar cap hit and term. This allows them to possibly go after Lindholm if desired or just extra cap flexibility for whatever they want. This allows them to stay very competitive, at least for the next few seasons.
I feel like Boston would rather a player now rather than futures, that's why I don't have them just taking the pick from New Jersey.

Why New Jersey does this?
They get their goalie. It allows them to take their time with developing goalies and gives them their true starter. It allows them to go into next season with Stanley Cup aspirations, as long as they don't lose everyone to injuries again.
I don't know if Ullmark has the value of their first this year, maybe something else needs to be added?

Why Detroit does this?
They get to keep building for the future and acquiring a pick to draft a high end young piece. I don't see Walman as a big part of the future, like most of this roster. They likely take a bit of a step back next season but I think it will be better for the long term.

Scratches are young players I could see making the team.

who said anything about a top ten pick?

The Devils pick in 2024 is a top 10 pick.

cool. there are 30 teams in the NHL that aren't the devils and the bruins. lots of them have draft picks.

I'm just talking about the DEVILS not giving up their 1st. If some team in the late 20s do, cool...but the Devils certainly shouldn't

If you look at the context of all of this from the beginning (and I mentioned it in the DeBrincat comment), you'll see this entire time I'm arguing why the Devils aren't giving up the pick as per mentioned by the OP in the trade on here.

okay, that's not what you said, and is a completely different position. you just said he isn't getting a 24 pick because he can't extend before the draft, and you said it was a fact. it certainly is not, it's a subjective opinion, and one that isn't really based in evidence that we have.

I said he isn't getting "the" 24 pick, which is the one from the discussion previous. As in the pick in discussion, not "a" 24 pick.

still a subjective opinion, and far from a fact.

a coherent argument would be, "a goalie on an expiring deal isn't getting the 10th overall pick (if that is what it is)."
