Description
If the sharks bring in celebrini, we need more NHL players to round out this roster and be at least respectable for our prospects to come in and develop. Getting more draft picks and assets are the main goal here as we transition through this rebuild. UFA is going to be tough to get decent players, so picking and choosing the right players that will complement the young guys is most important, but overall, i think trades are where MG can make some savy moves that help us in the long term.

Worth noting:

I think Granlund, Sturm, and Rutta are the trade candidates at the deadline. Benning/Burroughs should also be shopped but Benning's health has haulted any value he may have had with his contract. Burroughs played well this season, but only has value as an injury fill in/7th D man. Still may be useful.

Mukhamadulin needs NHL time this season, but not at the expense of his development. I think a split season between the Cuda and Sharks is ideal, but it would especially help if they find a long term partner for him by the time hes ready to come up. At this rate, he doesnt have much except Emberson if he is re-signed.

Couture is hopefully able to play 40-50 games this season, but no promises. He doesnt need to play overall, so theres no need to rush anything. He'll play when hes ready, and i'd hope that leads to some value down the road for him to move to a contender before his career is over.

Let me know your thoughts!

SJS
  1. Kotkaniemi, Jesperi
  2. 2025 2nd round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
Canes need to move off this contract if they want to re-sign Guentzel and Jarvis long-term. Kotkaniemi already lost his job to Drury multiple times this season, so it's clear he's been warned about his play but wasn't able to do much with the playtime. They can replace him easily, and the $5M in space is extremely valuable as this team wants to compete for more years.
CAR
  1. Smith, Givani
  2. Wiesblatt, Ozzy
  3. 2025 6th round pick (SJS)
Additional Details:
If a pick comes back SJ's way, the Sharks should be jumping at this deal. Kotka is a great rebuilding project for the team despite the term because of his age. He fits the rebuild and has a chance to be a steal at under $5M per season as the cost rises for top 9 forwards. I dont know the details of what could head back to CAR, but an NHL grinder in smith and a late pick seems... fine?

Goodrow is good. If we need to shed him eventually, we simply retain 1m and receive a mid pick. Obvious pass

Too much money and term for Addison and Zadina. I honestly wouldn’t be shocked if neither of those guys are offered contracts. If they do they probably won’t be 2 year deals.

I dont disagree that its an overpay, but the number is meant to be arbitrary. We're just trying to reach the cap floor in this rebuild so a few hundred thousand is beside the point. Overall, I'd like Zadina and Addison back for another season. I'd prefer 2 years for Zadina because i like his makeup more as a third line complementary winger, and that second year would be an opportunity to move him if he is worth the contract. Addison's second year is less ideal, but with this team multiple seasons away from a PP QB being NHL ready, I'm fine with another year while Thompson likely takes his spot sooner rather than later.

I removed the Goodrow trade after hearing the feedback. The lack of NYR picks makes it tough to see why SJ would do it without at least a 3rd coming back, but they only have firsts available to move!

The cost against the cap for a Kotkaniemi buyout is 835k per year - less than a league minimum player. If the ask is more than a 4th round pick to dump him - which consensus seems like it is - they are better served to buy him out.

like the comment above, I don't see Carolina dumping a 2nd for this. I think SJ would take him on for a much later pick.

Maybe, but 835k for what, 12 years? It's real money and still a drain on the cap..
