Rossi to the Island - MIN Perspective

Created by: ms39
Team: 2024-25 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 28, 2024
Published: Apr. 28, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Islanders get a young, two-way center. I don't see Lou generally retaining salary, but for one year would do it to make the cap difference negligible for both sides. Minnesota gets a big center prospect in Danny Nelson, a win-now center in Minnesota-born Brock Nelson, and a reclamation project in (also big) Oliver Wahlstrom. Brock, like Johansson, will be a UFA after 2025, so it's up to Minnesota if they want to try to re-sign him with the Parise and Suter buyouts no longer being so punitive, or flip him at the deadline. Guerin adds term to a Dakota Joshua deal to keep AAV down.

Just what the wild need. To trade their 22 year old center for a 32 year old center

Brock Nelson is a solid player but this feels like a clear loss for the Wild in this trade.

Not saying I’d love this as a Wild fan, but trying to get in the head of Bill Guerin + account for cap troubles! As has been shared on various MIN ACGMs, Michael Russo wrote this in response to the question, “What are the chances Marco Rossi gets traded?”

“Higher than you’d think. If the Wild could trade Rossi for the same level of high-end prospect, but one who’s bigger and faster, there’s a real chance they’d pull the trigger.

“For instance, the Wild were interested in Cutter Gauthier before Philadelphia traded his rights to Anaheim. That is the type of trade they might consider for Rossi.”

So, while Danny Nelson isn’t revered like Cutter Gauthier, he’s a big center prospect, and adding Brock for a year fills the immediate hole of a Rossi departure as Danny Nelson continues to develop at Notre Dame (and, ultimately, probably, AHL Iowa).

I’m not totally opposed to this, but I need to know how Nelson is progressing.

23 points in 30 games. Third leading scorer for Notre Dame! I'm excited for him as an Islanders fan.

I liked him a lot in high school, but always wanted more out of him…especially his motor and truculence!
