Stay in school Smith

Created by: Waffelz

Initial Creation Date: Apr. 29, 2024

Description
Smith elects to go back to school for another year, the Sharks don't win the lottery, and the tanking continues. Sharks take Levshunov, Couture is on LTIR for the entire year.

The team let Barabonov, Hoffman, Labanc, Zadina walk.

I'm not a huge fan of Kunin, but the Sharks organization seemed interested in keeping him around (and some of the young guys consider him a good mentor)
Musty makes the team out of camp, but ultimately gets sent back down to the OHL (not eligible for the AHL). The Sharks desperately need some veterans to prevent next year from being a complete dumpster fire, but I'm not sure what guys would actually want to sign with them. They can't even sign a guy to a one year deal and flip them at the deadline with retention, all of their slots are accounted for. The big problem is that they are super weak down the center, and there aren't many people available that will sign a short term deal with San Jose. Most of the guys available are 29+32, looking for that one big 8x8 kind of deal to end their careers on. I don't think that Lindholm contact is even remotely likely, but it's something they can retain on next year after the Burns contract is off their books.

Maybe they trade for some guys like they did last year, when they picked up Kunin and Duclair.

Lindholm is turning 30 before the end of the year, he's not going to take a 2 year deal at 8.5M when he can get a 7 year deal at 7.5M elsewhere

I wonder if he would take 10m? Take 2x 10 now, 6x7.5 somewhere else after the cap goes up again, make an extra 5m. You just have to be stuck on a bad team for a year and a half

It's not about the bad team part it's about securing a long term deal with a good cap hit when you are 30 vs 32. He's not Pavelski
