If MTL get lucky and win Celebrini sweepstakes

Description
Similarly to the "what if" scenario of last years "If MTL wins the Bedard sweepstakes", does MTL getting Celebrini change how they go about their "rebuild"? Should they speed things up?

Obviously, you would want to try an insulate Celebrini as much as possible. And I highly doubt Stamkos would consider signing in MTL...chances are slim to none. BUT... if Marty St.Louis and Vinny Lecavalier (yes, he works for MTL too) can give Stamkos the sales pitch, and Gorton and Hughes drop off a truckload of money, Stamkos would 100% be the best option to surround Celebrini with. Other alternatives (Toffoli, Monahan, or Marchessault).

Still LOVE the idea of essentially replacing Matheson on the blue with Brett Pesce. Would really solidify their blueline and "put everyone in their proper spots" while still not needing to rush their top prospects (Reinbacher).

Cap space still isn't an issue, Habs STILL have about $4mil in cap space here, while still having Anderson's $5.5mil aav buried in Laval. With Dvorak's contract expiring as well, cap space will still be good to go the following year.

Literally nothing indicates that that's remotely true. Didn't Stamkos consider signing with the Leafs in 2016?

Utah in a interesting place, where they essentially want to bring the somewhat small nucleus of players to Utah, and add by trading draft picks they won’t have roster spots in the future for established top end defenseman that will slot down some there current defenseman, and possibly move on from Hayton and or vejmelka. Adding matheson doesn’t really do much for them, when they can probably just go buy what they are looking for with cap room. Depends on ufa splash and roster spots, if Crouse would be available, but rather perfect size term and experience for the kids coming up internally.

You could use the same argument for Matheson. Not to mention Utah would probably prefer using their cap space on higher quality forwards (Marchessault, Toffoli, etc.) than overpaying for the available D market (Someone like Brady Skjei could be looking at upwards of $6mil aav deals...horrible). I don't think it can be understated just how valuable someone like Matheson at $4.8mil aav can be.

Fair enough good argument, same token can be said for a pesce add to Utah or a selling team that some token seconds would be suffice to add what is needed. If Utah swings for a guentzel or Reinhart, possibly a Crouse comes available, just to keep from blocking doan, Guenther, geekie. Will be interesting offseason with that many picks and cap to play with.

Yeah Brett Pesce this offseason just screams "overpayment needed to sign", either in salary or/and term. Lots of teams will be trying to sign him, wouldn't surprise me at all that he gets the max 7 years upwards of $7mil aav.

I think Utah should shoot for a scenario that fell into Vegas lap of marchassault and smith basically just being offered up for nothing, change of scenery/change of cap hits or whatever it was. Couple of gifts, similar scenario is out there with the cap and assets they have. Tkachuk/chabot or a werenski/laine or something along those lines, good spot to take on a nasty back up goalie contract also if needed. Hayton/vejimelka/soderstrom along with draftpicks galore and cap for days would be my blockbuster. Try to find that early 20s 2c worth hanging a 8 year deal on and a number 1 or 1b, rhd or lhd dman to have around a while. Matheson not a bad add by any means, just in more of a bigger swing mode.

Ya there’s going to be some regret for sure on Reinhart/guentzel/skjei/pesce not sure which one or all or none, but definitely some buyer beware with 7/8 year deals at 29/30 years old.

Agreed, I just don't think a Matheson acquisition for a Crouse package will hinder making any of those moves. Utah will have PLENTY of ammo to make those big swings.

Just not quite sure if Crouse is expendable, they do have a few power physical forwards and a few scorers, but possibly a little light of the combination. A lot depends on guenther, doan, and geekie and how quick they come and how they hold up to stay. Doan started fast, and seemed like Guenther was turning the corner on legit, top 6 threat. Geekie with some ahl playoff time now, and good whl season, possibly dark horse rookie of the year if there’s room in top 9. Quite the transition for gm jobs, from outhouse to penthouse in a transaction, will be interesting to see how he approaches, old blues ties, so probably big physical squad with skill and speed mixed in, so will be wild summer.
