Predicting Future RFA and Reserve Contracts

Created by: CameronSquires
Team: 2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 2, 2024

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
RFAs: (Offseason contract expires listed)

Nick Abruzzese - LW, C - 2025 - 800k x2-3. - Abruzzese is still developing well and could be a decent depth player for the Leafs.

Connor Dewar - LW, C - 2024 - 950k x3 - Dewar is a great defensive forward who has improved the PK since coming here. Dewar at 3 years would take him into his last year of RFA, so he would be an RFA once it expires that summer.

Max Ellis - RW - 2024 - 775k x0-1 - Ellis is a hard working forward who's production has dipped slightly with the Marlies, he is a decent depth option, but the Leafs may let him go to try another player as Grebyonkin, Cowan, Tverberg are all ranked over him and play on RW.

Noah Gregor - LW, RW - 2024 - 775k x0-1 - Gregor was a good 4th liner for the Leafs, but has been pushed down the depth chart with the addition of Dewar. If any of the Marlies/prospects graduate to join the Leafs it will be hard to keep him in the lineup. If they can't find a spot it might be better to let him go unsigned

Dennis Hildeby - G - 2025 - 950k-1.25M x2 - Hildeby looks like he could be a backup to Woll in a few years, a bridge contract for 950k-1.25M could be beneficial for the Leafs and Hildeby

Roni Hirvonen - LW - 2025 - 850k x1-2 - Hirvonen was a solid player on the Marlies but recently suffered a scary injury to his eye, a cheap bridge deal to watch to see how he develops would be good

Pontus Holmberg - C, LW - 2025 - 1.25M x1 - Holmberg has been a great bottom 6 forward, a 1 year deal would make him expire as an RFA

Matthew Knies - LW, RW - 2025 - 4M x4 - Knies has been a great addition at such a young age and has been such a help in the playoffs. (Saving a goal on the line in Tampa game 4, scoring in FLA and keeping the BOS series alive in OT). I think a 4M bridge contract to near end of RFA is ideal.

Mikko Kokkonen - LD - 2025 - 900k x2 - Kokkonen has still been developing decently in the Marlies and was close to making the team out of camp this season, a bridge deal to see if he can progress more should be okay.

Maxime Lajoie - LD - 2024 - 0 - Lajoie has been okay in the few games he has played, hasn't been a real liability, I just feel with other LDs Webber, Mattinen and Chadwick all coming, there might just not be space for him.

Timothy Liljegren - RD - 2024 - 3M x1 - Liljegren has been good, but inconsistent. A 1 year prove it deal going into his last offseason as an RFA could be good to keep his cost lower but also make him work hard for a big contract.

Topi Niemela - RD - 2025 - 950k x2 - Niemela is one of the Leafs better prospects, a 950k contract going until his second last summer as an RFA is a low risk contract to see if he can play a few games in the 3RD spot for the Leafs.

Keith Petruzzelli - G - 2024 - 0 - Petruzzelli has been servicable in the Marlies, with Peksa, Akhtyamov, Woll, and Hildeby all in the system, it's hard to find a spot for him.

Nick Robertson - LW, RW - 2024 - 2.5M x2 - Robertson has exceeded expectations this season, even with limited playing time, he has scored a bunch. I feel like a nicely paid short term contract to prove he can stay consistent and healthy would be really good for both parties.

Alex Steeves - LW, RW - 2024 - 950k x3 - One of the Marlies' best players, I'd like to see if Steeves could crack the lineup. 3 years would take him to last summer of RFA eligibility where the Leafs would know if they want to keep him around or let him go

Conor Timmins - RD - 2025 - 900k x0-1 - Timmins has taken a step backwards this year in my opinion. He is capable of playing in the NHL when needed so he may be taken back for another year for cheap but I wouldn't be shocked if the Leafs try to develop more RDs and let him walk or trade his rights.

William Villeneuve - RD - 2025 - 850k x2 - Villeneuve has been progressing with the Marlies, I see no reason as to why they wouldn't want to keep developing him.

Cade Webber - LD - 2025 - 1M x2 - Webber has impressed me since watching him, I feel like he could be a good 3rd pair defensive dman, a 1M x2 is a low risk contract to see what he's made of if he impresses this year

Joseph Woll - G - 2025 - 5.5M x8 - Woll seems like he has a good shot of being the Leafs starting goaltender as soon as next season. I am high on him and I think he could sign a long term contract with the Leafs as long as he looks good in his contract year.

Reserve List:

Vladimir Bobylev - LW, C - No Contract
Nikolai Chebykin - C - No Contract
Semyon Der-Arguchintsev - C - 800-900k x1 - Spending time developing in the KHL, if he wants to come back, the Leafs could give him a short deal to prove he deserves another contract.
John Fusco - LD - Unsure - I haven't seen enough from him.
Fabrice Herzog - LW, RW - No Contract
Vladislav Kara - C - No Contract
Semyon Kizimov - RW - No Contract
Mike Koster - LD - No Contract
Brandon Lisowsky - LW - 775k x2 - Surpassed expectations when watching him with Minten on the Blades, I'd like to see him get a league min contract to see if he can progress more
Hudson Malinoski - C - 800k x1-2 - Want to see more from him, but his rights expire in 2027 so there's time for growth to see if he can earn a contract. I believe in him.
Veeti Miettinen - RW - 775k x1 - Miettinen isn't the most promising prospect, but I think he has a shot for a contract.
Joe Miller - C, LW, RW - No Contract
Nick Moldenhauer - 850k x2 - The most underrated unsigned draft pick by the Leafs right now, I could see him getting a shot with the team in the future.
Wyatt Schingoethe - No Contract
Kirill Slepets - No Contract

Excellent work. Feel like both Robertson & Liligren are too high; $1.5M & $2.4M respectively (if Tre doesn’t move them)

Can they not extend him before QO deadline to get it under that?

Why would he take less than his garunteed minimum, when he could just not sign become a UFA and sign elsewhere for more
