Lindholm as a UFA target

Created by: V1NnY2
Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 2, 2024
Published: May 2, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Habs pay over market value for Lindholm on a short-term deal. Lindholm would get quality ice time (top 2C, PP and PK) to prove his value again (like Monahan did) and could be traded to a contender at the TDL in a win-win move. Sets himself up for a long-term deal with a bounce back season while Habs could get some assets for him at the TDL.

Lindholm will want more long term security than that. He's about the only above average UFA centre available. Now make 10m for one year, maybe Lindholm bites.

Lindholm isn't going to sign that. And I'll bet if he ever did a short-term contract he would make a full no movement clause to control any movement anyway so any notions of flipping him for a great return would end up like Tarasenko.

Of course he’ll want a long-term deal, but with the year he just had, I don’t expect teams to be lining up to give him a 6-7 year deal.. unless the cap hit is extremely reasonable. Which is why I think there a possibility that he accepts a one-year, prove yourself type of deal to hopefully raise his market value and sign a more interesting long-term deal next offseason.

Of course there would be some sort of NTC or NMC involved in such a deal. But it’s easy to say he won’t sign that and not say what else he would sign… curious to see your prediction with the year he just had..

Prove it deal??? He'll be near 30 years of age when the season starts. If teams don't know what he is....

I said many times last year that Conroy should have been fired on the spot for offering Lindholm close to $70m on the extension. Lindholm is a nice player. Maybe at his peak a low end 1C. He was never elite and his game is extremely physical so any age decline- like we might be seeing right now- and he will collapse. Much like most forwards with that type of game. He's been an average 3C this season, but someone will give him term if he wants it. Guessing at minimum he can get five years and $25m. But I stand by if he signed a short term deal, he's taking a prohibitive NTC or full NMC that will potentially eliminate most trade options.

I also think that’s pretty much what he can get on the market this summer. So, if I were him, I’d bet on myself and take the 7.5M$ short term deal and maybe be able to sign a better long term deal than 5x5 after that

He just bet on himself. He's played like an average 3C on two different teams. Maybe if he plays great in a long postseason he can boost some value, but I can't think of a player who gambled on themselves and lost worst than Lindholm. He will NEVER make up that contract offer he had last year from Conroy.
