Neither player does anything that any number of in house or cheaper alternatives couldn't. So you're essentially giving up prospects/picks for nothing.

On a side note, can we explain the thinking on Puempel being offered in deals? I feel bad for having to say this about the guy, but he could have been had for free all over the league, he's a fringe NHL/extra forward/soon to be AHL'er until he proves otherwise. That = no value.

Puempel is a throw in in every case. when NYR want to upgrade their roster, they'll also want to clear a roster spot in return. No point in having him around in Hartford or on the team. logical conclusion: throw him in in a trade.
Granlund hat 33 pts as a 23 year old on a terrible team. name a cheaper alternative. Wilson has been a solid middle 6 player for his whole career and at 2M you can't do wrong a lot.

Why is there no point in having him in Hartford? The Rangers have been bending over backwards trying to stockpile Hartford with AHL'ers and College players. That has Puempel written all over it! At 750k, he makes exactly what just about every other guy at that level makes. You can argue he has slightly more value than this, but we are talking about splitting hairs here, and that certainly isn't valuable enough that someone would want to fill a roster spot of their own with him. If nothing else, since he doesn't do anything for the trade he just sticks around as the extra forward.

Wilson is a 30 point player, has been all his career, and at 28 he isn't getting any better. That is quite a step down from what we are looking for, and to me isn't anything we can't find for cheaper (or free if it comes from within). Either way, i don't see the value in trading pieces off for him.

As for Granlund, I like that he is young, but being that I am looking for someone to come close to filling Hayes' shoes, I don't see the fit. They are a year apart in age, 33 points isn't 49. Maybe he takes another step in his development and closes the gap this year, sure! I Just feel like he hasn't shown me enough to make me believe he can. He gives me the feeling he is a winger, not a center, and a middling one at that (have you seen him on draws? He makes Hayes look good!!). So we want to wait around and see if he develops? I would rather grab Spooner and bank on history instead of the future. Just my opinion, I could certainly end up dead wrong about him. There's value in trading for a guy like this, just that I feel like we need more now.

Definite points for offering up novel names that haven't been discussed.

Puempel is waivers eligible, this may also play a role here. Colorado has no depth, so they may salvage something here.
I don't think the idea is to find an upgrade over Hayes immediately; because of the thin market, it's rather supplying the team with more depth options (Wilson) or someone with the potential (Granlund), surround them with capaple wingers and see what they can do until Chytil/Andersson fill that spot longterm. Worst case you trade them again, best case you've found your teams new depth options and neither would be catastrophic. And no, I haven't watched a lot of VAN games, but looking at their (bad) team, his statline sticks out to me.

Fair enough, I am just hoping (probably against hope) to fill Hayes' 3c spot with someone who can predictably put up 40 pts or so as he did. Then at that point its on Hayes to fill Stepan's shoes.

I like the idea of getting Colin Wilson, he doesnt need to be a highlight real player every night, but will add good depth to the roster. As for Granlund i dont see Vancouver trading hime for a couple picks(even though they are higher picks) and as much as i would like Granlund, Hayes will be the 2C as i see it this year, Granlund could be the 3C but why not use Wilson as the 3C? His f% is about what a third line center should have, he can play the wing which could help in other situations if a center becomes availabe and the rangers want him on the wing.

Granlund would be the better of the 2, I could see Puemple and 2 2nd rounders. Doing this however probably means hayes stays at 3C with Miller and Vesey which in my opinion is a great thing.

Plus i would hate having to lose Fast. Even though he will be out the beginning of the season, Nieves can fill the role as the 4th line LW until he returns. There is no need to go out and pay for someone to fill his role.

So all-in-all i think that Granlund would be the one to take of the two deals.

I'd bump Desharnais to 13th fwd when Fast comes back. having these depth options is important imo especially as I think that Nieves is an inferior option here. Wilson would be the 4C in that scenario
