Making way for Barzal n Friends

Created by: Hawkisles
Team: 2017-18 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 26, 2017
Published: Jul. 26, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
NONE of these deals exist to clear cap. The point of these deals is to ship away bottom 6/bottom pairing players so our younger talent can be brought in.

I want to make a blockbuster deal for a star C2 as much as the next guy, but the only one on the trade block has his price set too high (Duchene). Let's bring up the prospects and see if any break out. If the team is doing great with the infusion of young talent, then no trade is necessary. If not, more trade opportunities will present themselves as the season progresses, and we can address those as they come. For now, let's just focus on giving the kids the chance to break out rather than paying a king's ransom on the one active trade rumor in the NHL.

  1. 2018 3rd round pick (CHI)
CHI
  1. Chimera, Jason ($1,125,000 retained)
  2. Hickey, Thomas ($1,100,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Chicago gets deeper on offense and defense for as cheap as possible. The contracts only last for one season, so the salary retention isn't too problematic. This trade happens once Hossa is LTIRed.

  1. 2018 4th round pick (DAL)
DAL
  1. Kulemin, Nikolai ($2,000,000 retained)

This is likely the lineup for next season. I think Barzal, Dal Colle, Hosang need to be playing top line minutes in AHL. They provide depth and can be called up due to injury. On the other hand; if isles flop in the first half again then I would make those trades as well and give the youth the NHL experience for next year.

This is forward, honest thinking. Kudos.

Can I honestly ask, is there any consideration in trading Tavares? Do you feel you have the favorites chance of resigning him? Also, he isn't an old guy, but if your hanging your hat on Barzel, would it hurt to turn Tavares into a boatload of picks/blue chippers?

In my opinion, the Isles aren't going to secure a new arena without immediate hope of postseason success, and that evaporates if we lose Tavares. We lose Tavares, we become the Nordiques. He should only be traded if he makes clear he's leaving.

I think Barzal has potential to be a great Center. Maybe top line material. But I just don't think we'll ever win a Cup without Tavares or a player of his caliber, and while I'm very excited about all of our prospects, none of them will ever get to Tavares' level.
