It doesn’t make sense for jt. He has a family here. He probably has a few homes here. He’s not leaving. It’s much easier to trade Marner. Entering his prime, could use a fresh start. Leafs could tell Marner “look we want to trade you, and we’re not going to resign you. Can we work something out” Tavares just isn’t going I feel like it’s obvious
Yeah, I don't disagree about Marner, being more prone to being convince to waive, but they can't threaten him. He will be like "Okay, I'll play out the year and test free agency". Or even worse, he'll say "No, I want to stay, I'm not waiving." Not sign, until the he sees what happens next year in the playoffs. If it's not a positive result, he'll then request a trade to Florida with an extension, and the Leafs will get like a 2nd for him.
On the other hand, if they told JT, the same thing, he would be forced to look for a solution. Buffalo is the closest city and I think John Tavares's uncle John probably still lives there, so there's some support there if he's going to temporarily relocate his young family. Ottawa further but he doesn't have to cross the border to get there, so if he doesn't want to relocate his family maybe he could play there. Detroit is slightly closer than Ottawa but have to cross the border, so don't see it as an option. Of course, both teams would need to have an interest in him.
