Canes pass, especially if they re-sign Guentzel. Not gonna be able to afford both extensions. Also, just don’t think Marner is the kind of player we need, especially after that playoff performance.

Understandable. Forgot that Guentzel would need an extension. Other deals look alright though?

This is terrible 😂, I’m sorry. The only likely trade happening is Marner. Jt isn’t going anywhere. He’s being a leaf until he retires.

There’s just nothing in that Buch trade very appealing, not to mention JT ain’t waiving. The Blues are looking for youth and draft capital this is a lot of filler and side pieces

Both guys have NMCs, both guys probably want to retire as a Leaf. Tavares is closer to the end of his career and has a family so his desire to retire as a Leaf is probably stronger than Marner's. So, sure he's less likely to get traded especially since the demand for him would be lower as well, but he could just as easily be gone the following year. He's going to have to earn his contract, but even if he's still an effective player, they might not want to invest cap in him due to his salary demands (he's a 7-8M player still, no guarantee he takes a discount) or simply because they want a change in direction. Marner is more likely to get traded but also more likely to get an extension. Who knows though, maybe both guys would be gone.

The proposed trade though is not happening. Makes little sense for Tavares and the two teams. If he waives it would probably be for BUF or OTT only and I don't think they would want him.

For the deal itself, personally, I’d like to keep Morrow around. Pesce’s on his way out and Burns is starting to slow down. Morrow’s probably gonna play a bit next season and be an important piece in the coming years when Burns leaves. Best case scenario he becomes the long term 1RD and and pp quarterback. I’ve been wanting some long term stability there since Hamilton left.

It doesn’t make sense for jt. He has a family here. He probably has a few homes here. He’s not leaving. It’s much easier to trade Marner. Entering his prime, could use a fresh start. Leafs could tell Marner “look we want to trade you, and we’re not going to resign you. Can we work something out” Tavares just isn’t going I feel like it’s obvious

Yeah, I don't disagree about Marner, being more prone to being convince to waive, but they can't threaten him. He will be like "Okay, I'll play out the year and test free agency". Or even worse, he'll say "No, I want to stay, I'm not waiving." Not sign, until the he sees what happens next year in the playoffs. If it's not a positive result, he'll then request a trade to Florida with an extension, and the Leafs will get like a 2nd for him.

On the other hand, if they told JT, the same thing, he would be forced to look for a solution. Buffalo is the closest city and I think John Tavares's uncle John probably still lives there, so there's some support there if he's going to temporarily relocate his young family. Ottawa further but he doesn't have to cross the border to get there, so if he doesn't want to relocate his family maybe he could play there. Detroit is slightly closer than Ottawa but have to cross the border, so don't see it as an option. Of course, both teams would need to have an interest in him.
