Description

The leafs dont want to trade Tavares.

They also dont want him on the team at a 11 million cap hit.

To reconcile those differences there is a outside the box solution. Pay for another team to take him and buy him out. Then they would be free to sign him again.

In this example they trade him to the habs who buy him out and they buy out dvorak (to help offset cap and because he has a dirt cheap buyout for this upcoming season.

The price is a 1st because the buyout has to happen pre jul 1st before the buyout window closes and your asking a team to shell out millions of dollars for a player who they dont get to keep.

This results in a 10 million dollar difference. From here they can give jt a 3-4 year deal at a reduced cap hit and sign /acquire a top 4 dman.

Honestly it could work out verybwell for them.

1 big thing abput this is because of the signing bonuses Tavares after the buyout is out like 300k. But you gain a year

So instead of giving him say a 3 year 15 million (5 million aav) that starts in 25-26 you can give him a 4 year 15.3 million deal (3.825 million cap hit) that starts this year. And between that and the dvorak buyout your only at 4.5ish million and you have 6.5 million for a dman.

Tavares waives for MTL?

I could actually see MTL keeping him instead of buying him out, but I would likely want more than a 1st.
