I get it. Seeing very unrealistic Marner trades all day that don't make sense gets annoying. I'm tired of it too. But, it's CF. That's kind of the point.

As annoying as the Marner trades are getting, it really is hilarious to see the herd opinion on capfriendly be "well he's expiring in a year so realistically he's worth nothing", when I think we can retain if needed and get a pretty hefty return for an 80-90pt player, no?

Carolina sent a decent package for Guentzel with the notion they may not even keep him. Lindholm got a pretty good package and he's probably a rental as well.

"B-b-but Marner sucks in the playoffs!" (Albeit he was playing through injury this year) So does Lindholm. His playoff stats are much worse lol. He still got a good trade.

In a hypothetical where Toronto looks to move on from him in this offseason AND Marner accepts to move, we can retain and the team getting him would still get an 80-90pt forward at around 5-7m (depending on retention). If done in the offseason, the team would have him for the whole season + playoffs.

And you don't think we could get a decent return? Be for real.
Again, I get it's annoying to keep seeing Marner to teams where it doesn't make sense. But isn't that the entire point of this website? To spark discussion? Some of you reeaaallyy need to hop off your high horses.

But, that's capfriendly. Not wanting to give up good assets for other good assets. Gotta love it.

"We drafted this guy 28th overall 3 years ago and he's still in the AHL, you can't have him for your top line forward!!"

To your point, I think a Guentzel-like return is very realistic. Keeping in mind that Pittsburg retained some salary, took back a decent (but arguably overpaid) offsetting player (with term) in Bunting, and didn't get a guaranteed 1st round pick or top quality prospect in return.

I don't think the Kings have any interest in trading PLD, but here's what a comparable deal would look like.

    To LA:
Mitch Marner ($2.4M retained, no extension included)
    Nick Robertson

    To Tor:
    Pierre-Luc Dubois
    Arthur Kaliyev
    Jordan Spence
    Francisco Pinelli
    2025 2nd (becomes 2025 1st if LA makes SCF)
2025 5th (pick transfers if LA wins the Cup in 2025)

I'd take a swing on PLD, because I definitely think he can bounce back to a 60+pt PWF. My only issue with taking him is it's like he plagues every team he goes to. I recently watched a video that details the success of each team he was on when he went to them, and it was interesting to see how negatively he's impacted every team he's been on.

There's no surprise his on and off ice attitude kinda sucks. I like the trade you proposed if PLD wasn't a meat head.

Blake has confirmed that he's not buying out or trading PLD this summer, so it's probably moot. I was just trying to illustrate what a comparable deal would look like with a team I'm familar with.

The Kings don't have any other overpaid guys with term that would come anywhere close to offsetting Marner's contract, so Dubois was the only player that really fit the analogy.

I'll give you Torey Krug for Mitch Marner, Bbb but only if you retain?
