Sharks won’t be paying to take a 33 year old overpaid cap dump.

Seattle might do that at the trade deadline but not any sooner.

I wouldn’t quite say Orlov is overpaid but I don’t see the fit for SJ.

He's only worth that if he's 4-5 years younger. Either way, he's unlikely to get moved anywhere w/o retention.

why would the sharks need retention? its pointless. they aren't in cap duress. you guys need skill and shouldnt need to be paid to take someone who benefits your roster... convincing UFAs to sign probably wont be cheap/easy

Im of the opposite opinion of these two a 4th for orlov seems exactly like the type of deal we should do to get that stop gap guy who can moonlight as a top pair d while our prospects develop. We give away a replaceable pick and help reaching cap floor while settling a major a roster need + carolina gets to keep their mans and the necessary cap space.

Retention is never pointless. Especially for a 33 year-old going UFA after the season going to a prospective trade partner that has no retention slots of their own. Regardless of how much cap Sharks have, hockey is still a business that looks heavily at ROI and Orlov in his last season at 7.75 is very unlikely to achieve much. Grier has made it clear he is not looking to just spend the bank and that's all this really does. Its a cap dump plain and simple. One of our retention slots as it stands is Burns. If the Canes want any more help from the Sharks, they need to grease the wheels a bit more. And I guarantee nobody else in the league is taking on Orlov for any asset at all without significant, up to 50% retention.
