What team could possibly be better than this, Ottawa? Lol

Just a few come to mind:

New York Rangers
Carolina Hurricanes
Florida Panthers
Tampa Bay Lightning

etc

The Leafs would be better off putting Marner at RD than grabbing Carlson.

See, as a Caps fan, I would've said that up to a year ago. But he was surprisingly solid in his own end this season. It remains to be seen if that will carry to next year though

Man Carlson really is the most disrespected future hall of famer in the league

Offence: Toronto is better.

He is absolutely not a lock for the Hall of Fame. He's been a good offensive defenceman. But the hall is a bit of a stretch.

So reality doesn't matter eh? Maybe go check out the goals against stats for Tampa the past couple of years. Even their goaltending stats. Tampa is all offence and zero defence.

Vasilevskiy had one semi bad year but before that he's always been one of the best in the league.

2 years in a row Tampa has had worse defence than TO. You want TO to be worse than everyone but it's not going to happen.

On paper, the Lightning have a much better defense right now. And Tampa hadn't had McDonagh for the last two years.

When I say "on paper" I include all the players they had this year.

Rielly, McCabe, Brodie, Liljegren, Timmins, Giordano, Benoit, etc.

That doesn't change the fact that the Leafs have objectively been the better defensive team the past 2-3 years. I know I don't have to lecture you on hockey, but determining how good a team is defensively by only looking at the individual defenceman on the team is not an accurate method.

Why did they allow less goals?

You'll notice that Tampa Bay did not have Ryan McDonagh this year and now they do.

Goals against per game this year:

Toronto: 3.18

Tampa: 3.26

That's a very small difference and yes I think Tampa Bay is a lot better now with the addition of McDonagh.

So you can admit that the Leafs having just 3 players signed to their blueline for next season is significant.

xGA is probably a more important stat when evaluating defensive play. If anything, this just shows that Vasy didn't have a good year.

He has a similar or better case than Letang, Suter, and Subban who I think most people consider locks

He's washed. Tampa will be once again a shallow team heading in the wrong direction.
