What Lou Should Do But Wont

Description
Busy offseason indeed which started with trade with the Blackhawks to get an extra 2nd round pick by moving down a few spots in both the first and second rounds in a pick swap. Look for that to be the first of many Lou trades this offseason as he finally looks to move some key regulars. Not only do I have him parting ways with two forwards with some retention and asset attachments in Lee and Pageau, but also a rumored swap using Pulock to get his top line winger finally in Ehlers, who he signs long term after. He also pries DeBrusk away from Boston to add to the top 6 in free agency and gives more years to Carrier to get him to sign to replace Ryan. With the re-signing of Reilly, it also gives the Islanders more offense to join Dobson on the blue line to couple with the three more defensive guys in Pelech, Romanov and a hopeful return to health from Mayfield. A reunion with DeHaan (although he could go numerous ways to find a vet here) as the 7th is the way to go to allow Bolduc more much-needed seasoning. Lastly he adds a couple of bottom sixers in Bailey and Lomberg while saying goodbye to both Martin and Clutterbuck finally. With upstart players MacLean and Holsmtrom along with newly acquired Tsyplakov it gives the team a nice mix of players to round out the rotation and of course Fasching is still under contract. Yes, he sacrifices yet another 1st rounder (for the 5th straight season the Islanders dont draft one) but overall keeps his limited prospect pool (Dufour, Iskhakov, Jeffiires, George and Odelius) and does get picks in rounds 2-7 ultimately.. A completely new look for the Islanders- although I have little to no real hope (hence the title) that Lou can pull it off

UTA
  1. Lee, Anders ($2,000,000 retained)
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
Not only will the Islanders have to get Lee to approve the move to team not on his 15-team no trade list, but any trade will likely include an asset and retention. I think a 2nd round for 3rd round swap likely is enough on one end and 4 million in retention on the other, considering only a little over 10 million (10.35) is actually owed to him, despite the high AAV. We are still talking about someone who has scored 76 goals over the last three seasons
2.
NYI
  1. 2024 7th round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
Islanders create more cap space by unloading JPG

  1. Pageau, Jean-Gabriel ($1,000,000 retained)
  2. 2024 4th round pick (NYI)
  3. 2025 3rd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Pageau reunites with Trotz who loved the guy- but it takes not only two mid round picks the next two season (4th and 3rd in exchange for a 7th) but also 2 million in retention
3.
NYI
  1. Ehlers, Nikolaj
  2. 2024 4th round pick (WPG)
  3. 2025 3rd round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
This trade makes too much sense as Lou always trades his first rounder and the Islanders need that top line winger while the Jets need a RD to pair with Morrissey. Lou replenishes a 4th round pick this year and a 3rd rounder in 2025 in the switch with the money being about equal for 2024 while he also finds a fresh start for Wahlstrom. Lou signs the 28-year old Ehlers long term
WPG
  1. Pulock, Ryan
  2. Wahlstrom, Oliver [RFA Rights]
  3. 2024 1st round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
Jets get a RD to pair with Morrissey as Pulock agrees to the trade to be closer to home and Ehlers gets an extension with NY. Winnipeg also gets a first round pick (didnt have one) and a former first rounder in Wahlstrom also in the deal in exchange for a couple of mid round selections

If I'm the Jets, I take that and run. Doubt Lou would do it, though, as title says.

Question, though, I don't follow Isles too closely, what happened with Wahlstrom? Did he fall out of favor, or is it a case of losing spots to veteran players, or not having a clear role?

You’re overpaying on all of these deals. Lee and Pageau with those retention are actually worth that contract and should get a positive value. And Pulock and Ehlers should have around even value, if not Pulock having more value cause he’s a RHD and locked up.

Lou is old & basically Peter Chiarelli'd the team. If you want a new direction, I'd say your moves are a great starting point, but not nearly enough to get that freighter free from the Panama Canal. If there is another lockout with complaince buyouts: blame NYI!

Lee even at 5 million is likely going to take an asset and a 2nd for 3rd swap is not that large of one. JPG "might" not cost 2 mid-round picks (perhaps only one) with a million retention per season, but I wouldnt be surprised if it does. Remember these are 2 years left deals on players who are not top 6ers and most teams dont want to pay even 4 and 5 million on bottom sixers. As for Pulock, you could be right, but again I did not make it too much added (Wahlstrom who we have to move and a late first rounder for not one but two middle round picks in the next two drafts

Why? He had an off year and a million raise is about what he should get....plus, how many teams are giving him that AND four seasons?? Ya, he would sign it lol

Trotz loves him, so I could see it, especially at 4 million per

Trotz wants to get younger and faster, not bring in every overpaid and over 30 year old Isles and Caps fans claim was his favourite player.

$4M is still too much to pay a bottom six forward.

Well, you should consider multiple seasons when evaluating a player, otherwise many players have one off year. He'll probably get more term if it's only $5M or $5.5 to $6.25M on a shorter deal. Cap is going up and so are players' salaries.
