Carlson to VAN?

Created by: alwaysnextyear

Description
With Carlson a pending UFA and the Caps up against the cap ceiling this year and next, maybe a trade that can give WSH a couple young, talented players that are under team control for a while could work.

The Canucks would try to sign Carlson to an extension as they have a lot of cap room available next season and he's still young enough that he can help the young forward group develop. If he's dead set on testing the UFA market, the Caps would send a conditional 2019 1st rounder to the Canucks, and Van could get a solid return for Carlson at the trade deadline as well.

Caps are not up against the cap next season. Eller, Beagle, Chorney all gone next year, that's $6M in extra space, doesn't even include if cap goes up.

How do you figure they're not up against the cap? Even if they fill call up cheap guys like Bowey, Djoos, Graovac, Sill, etc., they currently only have enough room to field a 22 man roster. It can be done, but it doesn't leave much flexibility throughout the year.

I have them around $71M next year, that's with an Orpik buyout though which will most likely happen or they trade him. So with that and the cap most likely going up they could have about $6M in space with a full roster.

Sorry, I misunderstood you. I was talking about their cap space for this upcoming season. I'm sure they'll be able to wiggle some room next offseason.

O yeah there's definitely not much room this year but they have a team now under the cap with about $1.8M in space.

Why not just buy Orpik out now? And why have Beagle at the wing? He's at the top of the league in faceoff %.

I don't see this helping the Caps. They only have a few years left on the Ovie window, so they need to stay as good or get better.
