Start with Leon and go from there....

Team: 2017-18 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 6, 2017
Published: Aug. 6, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Go get Draisaitl and Will Butcher, then do some major housecleaning.

On D, I've created 3 equal pairings while Jerabek and Butcher learn the NHL game. I don't expect that to remain the case as the season progresses, but great to rest Weber a bit early on and let him mentor the kid.

Kirk Muller has one job: make Leon, Phil and Alex into killer centres. Nothing else matters. These three would provide a decade of strength up the middle.

Pleks to Pitt makes sense for all. At $3M, Pleks gives Pens an affordable utility C/W to replace Kunitz. Pens can always unload Pleks at deadline for a solid 2-3 pick. Habs liked Sprong, but there's still work to be done there.

Traded away McCarron for a couple of local boys who will bolster Laval for a few years and hopefully make the jump. McCarron is a Getzlaf clone, so maybe he could learn something by playing with/behind him.

I mean if you truly want to sign Drai for 11 mill go for it but he certainly isn't worth 11 million but I mean 4 first round picks ain't bad to have either

I like it. A lot of moves to do in 5 weeks, but this team would be unbelievably fast.
As to the comment above, I don't love the money, but LD is the real deal and would anchor the centre spot for a generation. Sorry that's not McCarron but it hasn't happened.
I love the idea of Pleks going to Pittsburgh after all those years of driving Crosby crazy.

This is all good. For sure Edmonton will take the picks. Just not sure what kind of team you'll have in 2018-19. When C. Price's 10,500,000 cap hit comes along. And others need to be signed?? 21,500,000 for 2 players is worse than the Hawks are currently for 2 players. Good luck with that.

Someone's going to sign him for about that much. There aren't too many 21-year-old with that kind of ability and work ethic. Obviously, I'd love to do it for less and the Oilers are trying, but whatever the offer, it has to be so poisonous to the Oilers that they won't match ... or wish they hadn't. If the Oilers do match, suddenly RNH hits the market super cheap, opening opportunity to deal for guys like Duchene, etc.

The only guys to sign are Danault, Pacioretty and Jerabek. Might eventually have to move Petry and Gallagher, but the cupboard is full to replace those guys.

This league, like all others, is moving to having no "middle". You either make big $$$$ or play for a mere $1M or $2M per year. As much as salaries are going up, they're coming down elsewhere. Max will get a good raise, but Gallagher and Petry are headed to UFA anyway because they're replaceable at a cheaper price.

There aren't many teams who can afford Drai at 11 you have what maybe 3? Carolina and phoniex and Montreal (if they trade and make cap space) doubt he goes to Arizona. I'd rather sign and trade him to Carolina they have more to offer but I guarantee he's a oiler and not a hab. I bet he signs 8x8 in the next month

Good analysis. I think Draisaitl thinks he's as good as or better than McDavid and probably wants to prove it. If he's willing to take under $10M, I'd expect him to take $8M x 5 years (which is still a boatload of money) and then hit UFA in his prime -- a la John Tavares.

Draisaitl doesn't think he has McDavid's magic, but he knows he's smarter and a harder worker. He also knows he wants to be the captain somewhere and that isn't going to happen in Edmonton.

I know what ya mean but I'm not sure. We can always trade RNH to fit Drai he is only 21 as you stated and already a dominate force and a big centre man if he can work on his face off game would be the best 1 2 punch in the NHL with Connor. I think you guys are more likely to see a RNH to Montreal or Carolina type deal

I don't think Drai wants to be captain haha I think he wants to stay in Edmonton where they will have potential to be cup contenders for the next decade with McDavid and Drai. If there was truly a offer sheet I think it would of happened by now

Could be, so the Habs might sweeten it a bit. The window is now for a dynasty and Pleks gives them a huge two-way player for another Cup run. Sprong is a winger prospect. The Pens have them coming out their ears. Sprong was only #62 in the Hockey News prospects list. He'll make the NHL, but he's not the next Guy Lafleur. Pittsburgh would be nuts not to shore up for another Cup run, maybe even 2 while Crosby is healthy and has the fire, and the team has some momentum.

You really think he wants to be Mark Messier to Wayne Gretzky? Every scouting report says Draisaitl oozes leadership. He doesn't want to play in McDavid's shadow. The guy is a stud.

And, warning to all Oilers fans, two rounds in the playoffs (after 10 years on the sidelines) is not "cup contenders for the next decade." I know. Montreal went to the third round in 2014, then lost in the second in 2015 and, when Price was hurt, didn't make the playoffs. The Oilers could be excellent for years ... could be ... but it sure ain't a given.

How would Pacioretty look on McDavid's LW? Would it make sense to build a deal around a signed Draisaitl for Pacioretty, with the obligatory bits and pieces to follow?

I think 10.5M would be enough to sign Draisaitl. Maybe 10M. 11M is too much, even for him. Besides, with Price's 10.5M contract, Canadiens would find theirselves in the same cap situation than Hawks.

Depends cause I'm sure paches will command around 7 million his next contract and he's got a damn good contract right now. Build me a trade offer entice me man

Seen a lot of teams never quite find the chemistry. That's the hardest part. McDavid is magic. Puljujarvi? Maybe. RNH is a wuss. I like Draisaitl (obviously) but is there room for him and McDavid? Lucic is garbage. Maroon is OK. Eberle is gone for Ryan Strome, who can't skate. Out back, the team is average. Klefbom is good. Larsson is pretty good. Not seeing any Norris Trophies coming to the City of Champions (hint: not one Norris vote for any Oiler). Talbot's pretty good, but, since coming to the Oilers, his GAA is going up and his save percentage is going down since.

After the Habs, I'm a through-and-through Oilers fan. I lived out there and was there for Pronger's arrival and his sudden departure. This group are a good team -- top 10, maybe -- but there's still a lot of work and a lot of luck (including keep McDavid healthy) before they're close to "cup contenders for the next decade." At least there's reason for hope.

Pacioretty, Carr (Sherwood Park boy and way underrated) and a first for Draisaitl at something under $9M/year. If Max dashes for UFA, you get another first. If you win the Cup, Montreal gets a first.

Can I get in on this? How about Weber for Draisaitl? Imagine how he'd lock down the back end for the Oilers. Habs would suck out back for a year, but they'd be rebuilding a bit under a scenario where they put LD and Chucky at centre anyway. Assumes they've signed Butcher and have Juulsen and Lernout are ready options. Jerabek had better be good ... and willing to re-sign.

      ... he certainly isn't worth 11 million ....

I couldn't help but laugh. None of these guys are worth the money. It's horrible to have to pay $160 to go see a Thursday night game against Phoenix in February. But of someone's going to be a marquee player in the NHL, Draisaitl has all the tools.

Could you all please stop talking INSIDE quote boxes? While you're at it, also stop quote boxing things that weren't mentioned anywhere on this thread before. Please and thank you.

      Sincerely,

I understood it. That 'not being worth $11M' statement was right in the very first comment in the thread. And, FWIW, I agree with Rafiki. Fewer games, lower prices/salaries. Give the game back to the fans.

Ahh no thanks Weber is getting older while I still believe he's a amazing d man. I would want his contract for what 8 more years till he's 40 or so? No thanks

But he could bring you 3-4 cups in the next 5 years, then you send him to Phoenix for a skate sharpener and say thanks. If he retires, that cap hit goes back to Nashville.
