The way Hossa's contract was structured is unarguably highly questionable, no doubt. That's separate from the LTIR issue at hand.
If the independent medical evaluation confirms that he does in-fact presently suffer from a legitimate illness that renders him unable to play, I don't see how his being placed on LTIR could be characterized as anything but above board.

Do a little research on "the gunk" and you will soon find that this is a much more serious issue than it sounds. Many, many NHL players have had their careers cut short because of this. It may seem questionable due to Hossa's contract being structured the way it is, however the Hawks are at a huge loss considering he put up 26 goals last season. Not exactly a player you'd consider a burden even at a 5M cap hit.
