Potential Opening Night

100% -- that's why I don't want to send him down. I'd prefer to trade/waive Rittich, but that's not a great look after just signing him. I'm not sure I see Poile doing that though. But Ingram has had a better camp than Rittich thus far as well, so...

Potential Look at the End of the Year
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>herzausstein</b></div><div>ultimately I don't see these players on the team at the end of the season:
Rittich, Cousins, Grimaldi, Benning, Boroweicki. What they'll return will ultimately depend on how they play during the year. Right now with how the preseason is going, I'm about ready to just gamble with Ingram and waive Rittich but that'd likely blow up in my face... at the same time, we aren't exactly cup contenders this season so *shrug*. Boroweicki was bad last season but he was dealing with concussion issues (or atleast some other medical issue). Cousins and Grimaldi are probably mid round picks 3rd-4th rounds. Benning is really cheap defensive depth probably in the realm of a 4th-5th.
The elephants in the room: Forsberg and Ekholm.... I think we should trade him now tbh. We aren't in a win now cup mode and by the time we are he's gonna be nearing decline (especially given his injury history). Get a good return. I kindof like the devil's return.
Ekholm keeps saying all the right things about wanting to stay in Nashville but.... he's 30...and just like with Forsberg we should get what we can for him. Bolduc is a good prospect just not sure how big of a need he is with Farrance, Davies, Del Gaizo, and Chistyakov in the pipeline. Probably wouldn't be bad to go ahead and get another good d prospect though.
All in all, I think the moves are all pretty decent. Would like to squeeze more out of the islanders deal but it's acceptable.
Afanasyev has made a great impression at camp. Playing in the KHL last season seems to of really helped his development. I think his play is just about demanding that he get a look at the start of the season. I think he's outplayed Tomasino tbh (and i'm a huge Tomasino fan). Jeannot made a great impression as well. I think it's time to give Novak some NHL time too.
I'd also like to trade Sissons but that's another story.</div></div>
I'd be open to trading Sissons, but I have a feeling he'll be here a couple more years at least.
As for Bolduc (or a similar LHD), I like that he replaces the size lost by trading Ekholm. He's a big body, and all of those guys you named are all under 6 ft.
And I agree on Afanasyev. He looks to have an NHL-ready shot and is playing great hockey right now. I want to see him make the team. I've been less impressed with Tomasino, but only saw him in the one game so far. If he plays tomorrow, it will be interesting to see who his linemates are. Afanasyev, Ingram, Novak, Pitlick, and Davies are my 5 borderline players that I think have really stood out this pre-season so far.

Shocked they got this much term for such a low cap hit.

Saros will make more than that. I also wouldn't mind seeing Poile give Tolvanen and/or Fabbro longer deals (around 5 years) at a higher AAV (between 3-4, closer to 3), similar to Ekholm. I don't know if I'd rather see a first line of Forsberg-Johansen-Duchene or Forsberg-Duchene-Granlund. Both combinations have shown that they can be very solid. I do like the idea of Johansen with Tolvanen though.

I like Wennberg, but it confuses our center ice -- I want to give Glass a shot to play top 9 C to see what we have in him. However, if they do end up signing Wennberg, I wouldn't be upset.
Saad just feels like the best, bigger name FA that could fit into the system Hynes wants to play.
And I want to give Jeannot a chance on the 3rd line. We protected him for Jarnkrok, so I don't want to see him stuck on the 4th. As for Olivier, I don't think he's a great player, but I do like what he brings to the lineup -- so I'd be fine with him playing 4RW.
Raanta just got a 1 year $2m deal -- really wish NSH went that direction over Rittich (if rumors are true).

For whatever reason, NSH is in on Getzlaf per rumors. Not sure why, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ --- I haven't really seen NSH in on anyone else, so not much to choose from lol
Apparently Rittich could land in NSH too per Bob McKenzie.

Quiet Free Agency
I could see this very well being the case -- though I just read that BOS isn't qualifying Ritchie, and I could definitely see Poile overpaying him because he is a Hynes-type of player... hopefully I'm wrong.
I'd roll these forward lines though:
Forsberg - Duchene - Granlund
Tolvanen - Johansen - Kunin
Jeannot - Glass - Tomasino
Trenin - Sissons - Cousins/Olivier

Novak is interesting. Would love to see him get a shot. It would probably be Cousins/Olivier on 4th line tho
Backup G is a toss up, not a huge fan of adding Koskinen but NSH won't get anything special to backup</div></div>
Novak has had a great start to his AHL career. In 90 AHL games, 19G 56A 75P. I think it's time to give him a shot in the NHL. Not sure if 4th line is the spot for him though. I had a hard time putting the lines together because i kept wanting to put some of the prospects in. I'd like to give Pitlick and Davies shots as well.

Ellis' 5Y x 2.75M is probably more directly comparable as they had similar NHL success at that point in their career.</div></div>
And Poile is a magician at getting those low AAV, long-term deals -- Ekholm, Ellis, Josi, Jarnkrok, Sissons, etc.

Yeah, I only see Fabbro taking that $2.75M on a shorter bridge contract - not for five years.
Koskinen has negative value. EDM would need to add a sweetener and/or retain to move him. I'd rather see NSH sign a better goalie for less in free agency. Maybe Rittich.

I'm mostly OK with this -- though I haven't heard much on the Granlund front. Supposedly we're close with Haula? Not sure what's happening there. This wouldn't be a very scary team, but maybe we'll get some nice surprises like NJD did when they went full youth.

$5.5m?? For Fabbro?? Not a chance.
I think 3 x $2.75m is the sweet spot. On a 5 year deal, probably something like the Ekholm contract. But in all honesty, he hasn't proven much at the NHL level, and even a 1 year $1.5m type contract isn't out of the question.

I don't mind adding Halak or Saad -- probably need more term or $$ for Saad though.
I don't think I would put Tolvanen / Glass / Tomasino together in a top 6 role just yet -- they're all young and would benefit from playing with some more experienced players, but in a few years that line could be deadly. Maybe a top 9 of:
Forsberg - Johansen - Tolvanen
Saad - Duchene - Tomasino
Jeannot - Glass - Kunin
Jeannot will definitely be in the lineup since he was protected in the expansion draft., and Carrier over Benning (likely with Ekholm) -- though Benning may play 3LD if Farrance isn't ready.

What a needlessly douchey response from one of the NHL’s least favorite fan bases. OP just saying what they think might happen and it might not be too far off, even if it isn’t a great lineup. Struggling prospect is also pretty harsh for a dude who has essentially had one NHL season.

I don’t hate it, I like your thinking. But I do wonder, why not just resign Granlund for less instead of giving up the assets for Buch? He is about 85% the player that Buch is and we already know he fits Hynes system. Plus we won’t have to give up our first rounder.

I like those forward lines a lot.
Probably an overpay at this point for Killorn considering their cap issues and not I doubt Bernier signs that, but other than that — I like it. I bet the OS would need to be a bit higher, but would that put it in the next compensation bracket?
I’d probably try to get at least one of Tolvanen/Fabbro on more than a 2 year deal. Otherwise, it could be tough when Tolvanen, Fabbro, Carrier, and Myers all need new contracts in the same years
But all in all, this team is legit.

He’s kinda perfect for what it seems Poile is going for: size, skill, getting younger.
Him leaving does make room for Kravtsov in the top 6 though — what kind of addition would you be targeting?

I wonder if something complicated ends up happening with Duchene or Johansen going to Seattle, likely with some retention.
They're both coming off ****ty seasons but if Nashville retains 2-3 mil they become a lot more appealing.
