<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Arh613</b></div><div>Fair enough, this is the best response that I've gotten on this website maybe ever, so thank you. If Monahan is hurt to start the season, but then is healthy in say December, wouldn't Calgary still have to have the space to bring him back onto the active roster? Also, I guess from an outside perspective, even though Monahan was injured wasn't he playing mostly on the fourth line at least towards the end of this year?

Finally, in my opinion, analytics can be very helpful and useful in evaluating a players use / contribution to the teams success, but sometimes I think that people can go a little too far with it. For instance in Buffalo Asplund is great analytically and as you've seen Olofsson is not, but Olofsson is still a better hockey player and will be compensated as such. Another example is Patrik Laine, he sucks analytically, but he is very good at scoring, which is a huge portion of the game and he is still a really good player. Moral of the story is that I think that analytics are really good and valuable when building a team, but I think there is more to hockey than just that, but I digress.

On another note, in a vacuum, what is Mangiapane worth to you in terms of trade value?</div></div>

It was reported at the exit interview that Monahan is weeks ahead of schedule on his recovery and should start skating this month. Barring a completely unrelated injury during training camp or preseason it is very unlikely Monahan starts the season injured in a position where he comes back a few months later.

Yes he did play on the 4th line this year and was even scratched for 2 games. His issue is he is too much of a warrior. Often it is a good thing when a hockey player is a warrior because they will tough put some aches. With Monahan he will he takes it to the other extreme. Until he approached management and got the x-rays in April about maybe having an issue they were completely unaware how bad his 2nd hip had deteriorated. It was the exact same thing the year before. After the season Monahan admitted to having the first hip start causing problems only 6 games in. Yet he played through it for another 44 games before the issue came to light and he was sidelined (note that him now favoring the other leg more probably sped up the deterioration of the 2nd hip). Hindsight would have been to check it right away and LTIR him last year and move Bennett to center. Then maybe he could have been back in time and healthy for playoffs. Instead he played at like 50% all season.

Mind you this is just to explain the last 2 years. He's now successfully had the double hip surgeries and that should no longer be an issue. He may not fully return to form but I look at Tarasenko as a player in a similar situation. 2 years in a row ended by major shoulder surgery, comes back and has a fantastic year.

I understand your view on analytics and I for the most part agree with it. To me analytics should be viewed at about 30-40% of the whole picture. Seth Jones comes to mind. Always seems to suck analytically but in reality he is a legitimate #1. But on the other side they cant be ignored. For example Tyson Barrie, great at putting up points but horrible analytically.

The thing is it is very hard to compare 2 players on different teams without using analytics. I think Olofsson is a solid player but I see him as similar to Kubalik, whereas I see Mangiapane as similar or vetter than Reinhart (that should also answer your last question).
