I wish people would stop with these.
Teams with their 1C and 2C signed to 7 year contracts don't make this trade. Especially when there are like 6 3C options in the pipeline or on the roster.
Great player, not worth the cost for buffalo</div></div>
I think that you are likely right, but if the contract fit well with the increasing cap I wouldn't be opposed to adding a young stud center like Petterson. I don't think that any of the top prospects in our system even come close to being what he is. I agree with the sentiment that the cap space could be used elsewhere though.
I'd like to see our analytics staff hit on depth forwards for cheap and get some absolute studs in that top 6 - top 9 though. Personally I don't need Rosen and Nuechev on the fourth line..

Holy hell dude, that’s pretty nuts</div></div>
No he is not worth that much, but I think that we need to start differentiating between the value of a first round pick.
If the Sabres 24 1st is somewhere between 17-24 (first round exit), 25 1st is between 24-32 thats way way different than it being top 10 picks. The quality and timeline of players is crazy different in those positions. Rosen was taken 14th overall, and truthfully I like him as a prospect. He is now going into his D+3 without any NHL games and probably doesn't get any this year either tbh which is completely fine because he was a project, but you wouldn't trade say a 20th overall 24 first for him at next years draft I don't think, point being that he may be worth a bit less than Sabres fans are valuing him as. Savoie is really the only blue chip piece. Krebs is a nice defensive bottom 6 C with some attitude (likely SOME untapped offensive potential) and Joki is a toss in very servicable bottom 4 dman who would need a contract.
I agree that this price is likely a bit high on what Petterson would be worth, but lets not pretend like Eichel (who never went over 100 pts in Buffalo) with a serious neck injury didn't get a significant trade package.
projected mid to late first = projected mid to late first
projected mid to late first > projected mid to late second
Savioe > Krebs
Krebs << Tuch
RFA Rights to Joki
I don't wanna trade Thompson and a 1st because we already know who he is as a ~90 point ~40 goal guy at 7Mill AAV long term. I'd wayyy rather move futures

PS - If you posted the same thing about Dahlin I wouldn't be able to wrap my mind around it. So as I know that its like a 0.00001% chance that happens I'm not too worried about the answer

I mean some people mightnthink you overpaid for petterson when he's got a 10mil cap hit but that only because they're 100% right.
That move to get a lower 1st back than what you spent to pick nice looking player like mitts is great if only you could get minnie to throw in a cap dump too.
All in all tho adding a 10mil 1st line center who can't get his team near the playoffs to a roster thats full of young talent was really what the sabres needed. Been the buzz all year, if only we had a number 1 center instead of all these prospects and we need to add skill.
Thank god you were paying attention this season.</div></div>
OOF :tearsofjoy
Didn't realize that Vancouver was so so so good and full of young talent.
Also can't wait to see the sabres try to fit Skinner, Thompson, Tuch, Quinn, Cozens, Peterka, Kulich, Savoie, Benson, Rosen, Ostlund, Kisakov, Poltapov, Neuchev, Whalberg all in the top 9 good call on that one.
Lastly, Petterson is a legitimate 2 way stud who scored over 100 points this past year. He is easily worth the 10+ AAV price tag IMO

Okay fine, but I need someone to please explain to me where Hanifin is playing and how we are affording the 8x~6 mill AAV contract that he is going to command next offseason.
Like I said before, if you think Gibson simply has nothing left at all then scrap the idea entirely.
But, in my opinion, we need to add a stable presence in the middle 6 on a 1 year deal. I think that Henrique provides that, I don't pay for access to any public analytic models so I'd be very open to being told that I'm incorrect about that. In addition, I think there is a balance somewhere between where teams looking to acquire gibson and the ducks land on his value.
People act like he's a bottom 10 player in the sport to try and convince themselves that he is worth less, and ducks fans will argue that he is closer to prime John Gibson than the current one, but he realistically is somewhere between those two places. in my opinion

To play him where? I get that Rosen is a top prospect, but realistically hes somewhere between 5-10 for us IMO. I'd have Benson, Savoie, Kulich, and Ostlund all in front of him and thats just forwards. Not everybody can be in Buffalo or stay in Roch forever.
I get not being too excited about Gibson, and if you don't believe he can bounce back to a ~ .910% - .915% type guy with a better team around him then the whole trade is pointless. BUT the reality is we need to clean up our D core a bit, and I'd like to see us move Olofsson for a more defensively responsible forward who only has 1 year left.
I like Clifton as our #4 Dman and I think that Hanifin would demand too high of an AAV on his next deal for us to bring him back as a #3 or #4 with no pp time...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Stadel</b></div><div>I could say "you ask around, you hear things" but thats not a good answer since you dont know me cant take my word for it so Ill put it this way. If you closely follow the spending habits over the last few years, you can see a major shift in how the team operates.
it's not just the lack of activity in the trade market or FA, i mean as pointed out, FA is a cesspool anyways. They are nickel and diming players at the lowest level. Dustin Tokarski left because the pegula's didnt want to give him a 1 way deal, which is typical for goalies in the AHL. The structure of contracts for fringe forwards? also includes a massive drop in minor league salary. Its a difference of like 200k, which they never used to care about, now its the biggest deal in the world.
But maybe the biggest give away is that if you look at these extensions, save for the first year of the deal, none of it is structured with bonuses. Almost all high end players get them throughout their deals, but the Sabres absolutely refuse to give them. Ever wonder why the worlds worst penalty kill never gets upgraded? That would require paying assistant coaches who know what they are doing more money than the goofballs who are currently here. The scouting department is still bare bones. Kevin Devine and Jerry Forton still have jobs here!! Part of it is the hit they took from the pandemic, sure, but really theyre just far more committed to the NFL side of thing because frankly, its better for them.
About the compete window, I have a genuine question. What team has ever had a 10 year window? not a window as in like playoff team, 10 years of genuine stanley cup competitive rosters? Most of the best usually get a 4-5 year target zone because they double down to improve their chances of winning. ITs the natural trade off. Your window gets "shorter" but your odds at winning in theory get better"</div></div>
Vegas is in year 6 and only missed the playoffs once due to injury (4 WCF, 2 SCF, 1 chip is phenomenal over a 6 year span!) and I don't think their window is closed yet by any means. TB has been good for darn near a decade now, I'd say PIT, WSH, BOS are at or near the end, but its been a long time of consistent chances to win a cup.
I was more alluding to seeking somebody like Hellebyuck and extending him 7x9.5 and then having the door to a championship slammed shut in our face when he inevitably hits a wall 4-5 years into that when hes 35-36 years old. Even with a long window its not like they are gonna be ECF every year, some years they will be first round exits and some years theyll miss the playoffs by a point or 2, but i think with the current contracts and pipeline we are set up well to be a consistent threat in the eastern conference.
To be clear I'm not at all saying that they shouldn't make a move, but I think its okay to not try to cycle out effective bottom 6 role players to try and find an equivalent replacement for ~1 mill cheaper

The team being 3rd in goals for is totally unsustainable too. They actually didnt produce a ton of scoring chances at 5v5, they just had insanely good shooting luck. At least a few will regress and when that happens, the bottom will drop out on them again.</div></div>
Where are you getting the internal cap number from just curious?
Maybe unsustainable and I agree that not everybody will have career years again this season, but is it not reasonable to expect at the very least a more consistent presence an output from nearly every player: Cozens, Quinn, Peterka, Mitts, Krebs, Dahlin, Power, Sammy + including Levi in the goaltending conversation already improves the roster. Building through the draft means that you need to let players develop and play. No reason to try to open a window for 4~5 years right at this second when you could have a ~10 year window starting after next year based on the pipeline + assets on hand

This seems like a significant overreaction to them bringing back the same forward group that was at the top of the league in goals last season?
Also, there is plenty of money to add a Dman, but people don't seem to understand that we aren't looking for a top pair guy so there is no reason to pay major major assets to acquire a top pairing guy like Hanifin or others of the same ilk.
In terms of a goalie, I personally am not keen on paying premium premium assets for a short term (1 year maybe 2) solution. I'd rather acquire somebody who can tandem with Levi for 2-3 years

1. The Caps stand pat and make the pick at 8 (I would guess Benson, Dvorsky, or Danielson, or possibly even Michkov if he falls all the way to 8)
2. The Caps trade up, most likely with Montreal, to take Michkov.
3. The Caps trade the pick as part of a bigger deal for a top 6 forward, i.e. William Nylander</div></div>

I threw in Bryson at basically league min to be like a 6/7 D if that's of interest as well. Could it be possible that Gibson is more valuable to Anaheim then outside teams looking at the recent trend in statistics? (Again forgive me, I am unwilling to pay for fancy analytics at the moment so maybe he is playing significantly better then his raw stats show.) Because to be quite honest I would be nervous about the Sabres acquiring Gibson at his current cap hit and thinking he's the guy who is gonna stabilize the crease leading up to Levi..
