TDL deals, NO RENTALS
Love the Jarnkrok pickup, great contract for a 3C. Demers' contract scares me though- if he was on a 1 or 2 year deal maybe, but years 3 and 4 are gonna hurt when looking to sign the kids long term

Maximize Assets!
A perennial 30 goal scorer, young winger, a first and a second are scraps now? I admit that it might take more than that for Hamilton, but Flames would be dealing from a position of depth at D to address their weakness up front. Would be huge for their top 6.
According to Hockey's Future the Rangers have no future number one in their system- Pickard has been a starter in the past and is still young/developing. Who is this heir apparent to Hank that you speak of?
Bozak for 2 seconds is totally fair. Remember Brett Connoly? Price was 2 seconds. Lars Eller? 2 seconds. It seems to be the going rate for a decent top 6 good top 9 forward.
And I'm not convinced Sam Gagner is the guy, though I'd be happy if they got him. What they need is a cost effective 3C who can hold the spot for Aaltonen/Brooks/Gaultier in a couple years.
As far as the money goes, whats the issue? You lose 10.5 million with shedding martin/bozak/jvr and add 10 back...

Every Team's Offseason 5 (Bruins)
Thats a good looking team right there. Gives the young F time to develop but the team stays competitive in the short term. The only thing I can see is I think the Bruins will be more likely to look for a long term deal with Pastrnak, but a shorter term/cost makes them more competitive in the interim so not a bad trade off!

Slow but steady..
Thanks ON3M4N, I live in Toronto so its tough to find somebody who knows the B's to bounce ideas off of. Not to mention the media doesn't talk about it. I really liked Dominic Moore on the fourth line for leadership and faceoffs, but understand he's far past his prime. As for Joe I know its a pipe dream he's always been my favourite player and I've never quite gotten over the shitty way he got booted from Boston.
For Pasta I'd love to get him cheaper but I had no idea where negotiations sit between him and Sweeney. Sounds like a reasonable deal for both sides. Spooner is a guy I can't quite figure- I like him but I think what I like is his potential- problem is theres a point where a guy is who he is and isn't developing anymore. I hope he's not there yet.
I wouldn't quite call Cave crap, from what I've heard he's got solid 4th line PK potential and oozes character. I know its a lot of buzzwords but sounds like a guy every winning team needs. I like the idea of a guy like Zucker who can play on the 3rd and maybe slide to the 2nd, so I'd be willing to throw in a 3rd pick to even things out. Next year (contract year too) is definately a big year for Zucker.
I like the idea of Beleskey but plain and simple he hasn't been good enough. Ive heard he has fans around the league though so maybe George McPhee is one and we can get out from his contract for free.
I hadn't heard about Krejci saying that flat-out, so that changes things. I hate NMCs cause they can really handcuff teams in this kind of situation. He's still a good player but I shudder because years down the line we have to pay McAvoy Carlo Senyshyn DeBrusk etc and we'll still be stuck paying him 7 million per for his declining services

If I'm Vancouver I would take the deal for Huberdeau. If only because I'm looking to bottom out (much like this year), get some youth in the lineup and hope the ping pong balls fall for Rasmus Dahlin in 2018 ;)

NYI Post-Tavares
Basically I'm saying theres 2 ways I think they could go, because any half-measures would be a mistake IMO.
1) Trade for a C like Krejci and continue to add through FA or trades veteran players who can win you a cup within a 3-4 year window. This may mean moving some prospects out.
2) Take return for Tavares and sell/let walk older players near the end of deals. Fill the roster with young players from your pipeline. Use cap $ to re-sign young talent as it develops
Its easier for me because I'm impartial as a non-Isles fan, but I've always been a fan of a slow build especially when you're as rich with prospects as they are

Well then well played DragonRaptor...
I agree that Bourque's run was incredibly rare. That was part of what made it so special (to say nothing of Sakic handing him the Cup first). If, hypothetically, there was a strong defensive team with trouble scoring that was a willing trading partner, adding 2 top 6 F talents might be enough to put them over the top. I know its living in a fantasy world but its fun to discuss

From the article...
"Our future is not only up to us now," Henrik said. "We know that the management needs to see a place for us in this rebuild. It's not always in their interest to have guys like us around. Maybe you need a change of personality and all those kinds of things."
Interesting article for sure, they clearly love playing out on the coast. But they wouldn't be the first players to have a change of heart. They seem to be fully aware of what a rebuild entails. I just find it hard to believe they'd go out with such a whimper after their great careers. Still, my question was about what a trade would look like, not whether they'd accept one.

As a Bruin fan, who went through this kind of situation with Ray Bourque, let me tell you it hurts to see them leave but feels just amazing if they get their cup. I agree it'd be tough to get them to move their NMC's, but I think they at the very least deserve management to level with them about their plans for the coming season or two. Make sure the Sedins understand that they are not going to win with Vancouver at least in the near future. They're both so reserved and quiet you'd never know if they were unhappy but I'd be real curious if they've made peace with the fact that they (probably) won't win a cup or if they're still hungry

you can't get anything for Grabovski's contract. He's never going to play again.
And are you saying they shouldn't sign another top 6 forward if they lose JT?????</div></div>
I thought Grabo was probably done but theres always creative accounting (Pronger/Horton/Savard...) that can be done. And no I'm not exactly saying they shouldn't sign another top 6, just that they need to take a good hard look at what they've got. I would consider the trade I mentioned earlier, for Krejci, if you want to stay the competitive course. But if I'm the GM I think going forward with what you have already in the pipeline and letting your youth excel could be the best path towards competing long term. I really like the prospects the Isles have and I think a lot of them are ready to take the next step.

I see why you'd want them to retire as canucks, but its kind of sad to think of them retiring 2 years down the road after 2 years of wallowing in the depths of a rebuild.
Great analysis DragonRaptorHybrid, you seem to really know your stuff, and I'd agree that the Panthers look to be a good fit for them. Looking at the Panthers depth at forward they didn't seem to miss Johnathan Huberdeau last year when he was hurt and with Barkov/Bjugstad/Trocheck I think they can afford to give up some of their younger talent (Especially with his $5.9 mil cap hit).
For the Canucks a Horvat/Huberdeau 1-2 punch would be incredible, and although the Panthers AHL unit doesn't have huge depth, targeting a low risk/high reward talent like Dryden Hunt and a young d man (Downing) along with picks sounds like you're getting close to a deal. I doubt the return would be much more than that from anyone else due to the money they're both owed

And even if the Canucks retain the max on both the twins only 3 teams can afford them (CAR NJD FLA). 2nd their no trade clause is a killer but they might wave. 3rd considering all of this the only team who would want the Sedins are cup contenders and they usually lack prospects.
Trading the Sedins would be great but it's just not gonna happen.</div></div>
Thats kind of what I thought. I was thinking about SJ or ANA because I could see both teams shuffling the deck. As a SJ fan, looking at the roster, if you could move out some money from your defense, (Braun?) then put Hertl and a couple picks together, it'd be interesting to see what vancouver would say.
I only say Anaheim because with the expansion draft, their defensive logjam, and another (potential) disappointing playoff run, I could see them making a drastic change.
Plus I get the impression the Sedins would love to stay on the west coast if possible

Yeah Cave's ceiling seems to be about that. Miller is more experienced than Folin but definately comprable talents. He's reliable in his own end though and is very physical. Maybe the bruins throw in a pick as well to sweeten the pot but I think theres a deal there to be made

With the Sedins heading for FA after this year the and Canucks going nowhere fast, what could a deal look like? I'm assuming for the purposes of this deal that Henrik and Daniel would be traded together. I think there are only a couple of teams that could even consider taking on 2 top 6 guys at their cap hit, but i'm sure there are some creative moves to be made by some aspiring GM...

If Tavares leaves Long Island in the summer, how do you see the Isles moving forward? I think they've still got too many veterans and guys entering their prime for a rebuild. In my mock gm I traded them David Krejci from Boston (with Bruins eating just over a million in salary) for Ryan Strome and a 3rd rounder. Isles still have enviable depth at C to withstand losing Strome and get a proven winner at a decent cap hit who is only 31. How do you see Garth Snow managing the post-Tavares world?

Legit question, not a troll job, but for a legit rebuild, don't you have to move the sedins for some kind of prospect capital? What kind of deal would you think could happen? Or does Vancouver keep them around or let them walk later for nothing?

Good call Clark... I can see the Sharks going that route. I get the feeling that Joe is done in SJ though... just feel like for him and the team its time to move on. But another UFA, maybe Hanzal? I really love Meier though but it'd be costly.
Switched it up to a deal with the Isles. Terrible management and ownership mean that they could be fleeced in a deal lol... but seriously with Tavares gone (I'm assuming for this deal) I can see krejci fitting there if the bruins ate some cash

I think he's still a stud #2 for this season and maybe next, but its the twilight of the deal that has me worried. That being said I do think he is overpaid even now. But for a team like SJ who might not be ready to say their window is closed I wonder if they might consider taking him on. He's only 31 but the B's should be grooming Ryan Spooner to take the #2 C role IMO

I get trading Fehr away for whatever but why are you giving up on Johnson and especially Rychel for scraps? They've both got upside and Rychel could be ready as soon as next season.
As far as OEL goes, a package of picks would help, but probably more 1st or 2nd rounders. I don't think theres any way they want any part of marchenko/marincin who are replacement level. But if you want to accelerate the rebuild OEL is about as good as it gets and ARZ has gotta know theres not much chance of him sticking around past next season.

I dunno about paying Polak 3 mil a season when you're going to need every penny to resign Matthews/Marner/Nylander in 2 years. Plus the bottom 3 D are way too slow IMO for the new NHL. Need a mix of size and speed. Dominic Moore would be a good fit for the 4th line but how much longer are you going to keep Freddy Gauthier in the minors?
