How to fix Devils
I don’t think Nashville would accept that trade. I think the Preds want an elite prospect or young player along with the pick and no cap dumps on the return (ideally). For the Holtz to MTL mock trade, I don’t know how to feel about this trade. I think it’s creative, but if Devils are going to shop Holtz, they’ll want to get an elite asset for Holtz, not quantity.

Losing my mind over the Lindholm deal
I agree in so far it’s a steep price to pay for Lindholm. It always hurts to part with a 1st RD pick AND a good RD prospect for a rental, but you’re also dumping Kuzys cap hit. It’s very expensive to create cap space in this NHL trade economy, so using Bruz to grease the wheels in this deal is good value, especially for where he was drafted.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>V123</b></div><div>What if they added a prospect in the deal??</div></div>
It’s tough to make a competitive offer as Edmonton because they have the worst prospect barn in the league and the young talent isn’t inspiring. Blackhawks are going to target Holloway (C/LW) and Akey (RD) as they have the most promise. Also, in general, most teams don’t use two retention slots in one trade so it needs to be a slam dunk return for Chicago in order to justify that.

Kind of funny how Anaheim almost traded Corey Perry and a 1st RD pick to Edmonton for Mike Comrie back in 2003. Now Perry is an Oiler.

Yep and I expect Fitz to flip any acquired first for an NHL player (preferably goalie). It just gives you so many more options and leverage in trades. Also, it doesn’t hurt to just keep the pick since Fitzy is a good drafter and keeps the pool filled

I think you can replace Broberg with Holloway, but Edmonton might not want to move him. Or just simply trading Toffoli to a different team and gaining an M6 FWD (of the Broberg, Holloway grade) who’s still has team control, plus a draft pick. I’m trying to stay realistic because contenders will not trade already established controllable assets or top 50 skating prospects, unless they’re getting multiple years of control.

I think if they aren’t confident that they can make a run in the playoffs, they should sell and acquire future assets and use those picks and prospects acquired to really go after an established goalie in the offseason. We are injured to no bounds this season. On your second point, I do think that Ruff should be replaced, but I also admit I supported the extension. I really wanted Brunette, but he left for Nashville. Yes, the PP has gotten significantly better since Bruno was removed, but our PK fell off a cliff.

I expect Toffoli to at least fetch the Lehkonen to COL deal if it’s a player deal
- 2nd RD pick
- 1st RD prospect/player. I don’t think Broberg is as valuable as Justin Barron was at the TDL as he is older and a LHD.
Also Bertuzzi got a 1st and 4th with salary retained from Boston last year, so there’s multiple ways of making this trade.
When it comes to Miller, any good 3RD will at least get a 3rd (L. Schenn) or 3rd+ (Zadorov) and while Smith may stay, he’s a rental, replaceable and can always be brought back in the offseason. I don’t have the Devils trading anyone with term. I also expect the Devils to trade some of the picks they accumulate and try to package it for an established goalie in the offseason. Nosek would be like Nyquist, except worse so a 6th/7th is his value.

Canucks didn’t draft Willander at 11OA just to move him one season later. He’s off the table and Quinn Hughes future pair. Him and Lekkerimäki are the only pre-ELC guys off the table.
Also, I like Hanifin and while I think it’s more than fair, instead of a mid rounder, you get a late round pick and Karpovich. I don’t know how aggressive the Devils are going to be at the deadline.

Changing the Lines

I like Meier with McLeod. So my recommendation would be to simply switch Meier and Bratt here.</div></div>
I can get behind that. My thought process is Mercer needs to be a complement to Hughes or Hischier to succeed. Holtz loves playing with McLeod and Meier played his best with Hischier. I thought a Holtz Bratt duo would work wonders because both Bratt and McLeod are good play drivers and will feed Holtz goals.

Healthy Lineup
Great synopsis! I like the lines a lot. Only thing I’d say is I am thinking Meier goes on the McLeod line with Holtz. The Palat-Hischier-Bratt line has been nails as of recent. Btw, Smith-Haula-Lazar is an amazing fourth line as well. Bastian hasn’t really earned his minutes as of late, but also being centered by Tierney won’t do him any favors.
The whole Haula, McLeod 3C/4C that you mentioned earlier shouldn’t matter too much. Vegas won the cup with a balanced lineup with great emphasis on building down the middle.
Edit: The only thing I would disagree with is Zadorov. I dont think he is that much better than Kevin Bahl and i believe there are better targets out there. I do think a change in the D pairing might help.

I don’t like Lafs progression, but he’s still worth a good return. If he has the same type of season this year, I’ll change my mind. It’s very difficult to give up on a 1OA and that’s why I can see the swap. There’s also the added benefit of cap flexibility (like ANA needs it) and just the reality that most GMs believe they can fix a player, so they roll the dice.

The best 23 arent always the chosen 23
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>A great way to piss off Nemec (or any pro player) is to sit him in the minors, just to save cap. He wouldn't have much interest in being a Devil for 10 or 15 years if that's (in his eyes) that's how the organization treats him or the team.
And if I'm a Devil player (except for maybe the iffy Dmen), I want the best chance of winning NOW....not this 10 year BS.</div></div>
Here’s a list of defensemen who’s contracts slid for 2 years:
- Evan Bouchard
- K’Andre Miller
- Moritz Seider
- Kaiden Guhle
- Brandt Clarke
These are some of the best D prospects and now players in the league. It’s not out of the norm to play two years in the minors after getting drafted and the team can afford to be patient with Nemec, like the Kings are with Clarke. It is very uncommon to see pro players pouting for not making the roster and given the players the Devils track record of developing NHL talent, it shouldn’t be a problem. Lastly, there is a business element to it and managing contracts in a flat cap era.
Teams want to juice those ELCs to maximize their odds at winning a cup and if the team doesn’t see Nemec as ready to take play everyday, send him down rather than ride the pine.

Day 1 Of Waivers Ty Smith
I think he can succeed in a Calen Addison role where he quarterbacks a power play and plays sheltered third pair minutes. One team that should definitely put a claim is the Isles, they need power play help. Also, the ink has officially dried in red, Devils won the trade. Shutdown defenseman are very expensive (Ekholm, Chiarot come to mind recently) and that the Devils didn’t need to part with a 1st round pick is very tidy business.

If Vancouver got this type of package, it would solve their Top 4 RD and middle six C issues immediately and TWO Firsts to play with. I’ve never seen a package like this exist for any player with ~1.5 YRs of control left (won’t be traded unless VAN falls out of the playoff race) and I’d be very surprised if they secured that return.

I usually don’t say this but this is a far worse roster. You make a lateral move in net with a higher cap hit and overpay for a center (who wouldn’t play center in NJ) we don’t need and make another panic trade with SJ. Now we have a 3rd line with Bastian and depleted of all young talent. I guess you’re right with going all in. All in to be terrible for another decade because the roster wouldn’t be good enough to support the core.

Comparing Zegras to other RFA Trades w 4 YRs of Control
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TrevorsZebras</b></div><div>I am purely speculating here because there is virtually no information on this, but I think Zegras was the one pushing for a bridge. Best contract he could sign now is an 8x8, but if he takes $6M over the next three years and proves himself a star producer, with the cap going up, could be looking at a 8x10+
Although I think there is also some truth to Verbeek being skeptical to sign him for 8 years with a lot of question marks still on him. If that is the case, then I really dont understand it from the Ducks perspective but we may never know for sure</div></div>
I have my own reservations about Zegras as a player and I’m unsure if he ever takes that next step or stay at C. From a Ducks FO perspective, I’m confused why you wouldn’t extend him. He’s good for business, a fan favorite, and the first drafted piece of this rebuild. I don’t get why Verbeek is trying to play hardball with his players. Realistically, hardball only works if you have (or on the precipice of) a winning culture and the player fears they will miss out on a potential cup run, if they walk.
Yep, Ducks FO and Zegras agree on term, not AAV. It’ll be interesting what happens to Zegras because I think a lot of the younger players gravitate towards him and if he is traded, how will the other building block pieces feel? Will they also fear they’ll get traded or want out and then start rebuilding a rebuild? All very valid questions.

Phil Kessel 2009

Heatley 2005
Selänne 1995
Seguin 2013
Skinner 2018</div></div>
I forgot Kessel, but he went for two 1sts and a 2nd, close to the Dougie Hamilton trade. Yeah Zegras is a better player, but both had similar results on their final year of their ELC. Also, both were fringe stars that have another level to their game and also played the same position. Also LIRIK commented that Drouin was on the third line a lot, while Zegras was on the top line. Not a perfect comparison, but it is justifiable.
