How to get out of cap hell
Habs offer a mid round pick for Pageau. Let’s say a 2025 3rd round pick (VAN).
I would prefer resigning Monahan to a 3 year deal even if it means paying him around $6M. But Pageau is a good plan B.

would Columbus do this
The difference between Johnson and Dach is that Johnson had an excellent D+2 year, very similar to the production Slafkovsky and Cooley are putting up this year. Whereas Dach never broke out at the time of trade.

Dubas
That’s an easy yes by the Habs. Habs have a ton of cap space and Karlsson plays 24mins per game. Giving up Savard who will be a UFA in 1 year is a no-brainer.
Dubas would be crazy for making this trade. He might end up giving the Sharks an 11th OA pick for Karlsson, and now flipping him after 1 year AND retaining $2M/year! Not going to happen.

Offseason trade idea
Props for the creativity and you are correct Habs desperately need a 3C but I think 6 more years of Couturier is too much risk for Habs management.
The Canadiens have a ton of cap space in the next 3 years, even when including Anderson’s and Gallagher’s contracts. They don’t need to dump Anderson. The negative impact of the last 3 years of that Couturier contract will outweigh the benefits of its first 3 years.

UFA shopping
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>habitantlecolon</b></div><div>Why not keep going into the rebuild way and sign NCAA UFA like Collin Graf?</div></div>
Why not both? Our forward depth after Slafkovsky and Roy is slim pickings. If Habs pick another defenseman in this year’s draft, we will need another prospect like Graf.
I’m fine with giving up a pick to move Dvorak to a team like Arizona or San Jose if it means we use that move to pick up Graf for free.

24-25 Revamped
Habs don’t need cap space so they wouldn’t give up a 3rd to dump Dvorak. Dvorak at the TDL with salary retained isn’t a negative asset. He would be a pretty good 4th liner on a contending team that gives that team center depth and PK depth. I could see Dvorak return at the TDL a 4th for the Habs and 5th for whoever retains 50% of his cap.

The NHL needs to change these things
- Get rid of TV blackouts.
- 10 min OT, add a no “backcourt” rule
- Limit coach challenge review to 3 mins. If inconclusive, then call on the ice stands.
- Salary cap limit to ice players during playoff game. You can carry a team that exceeds the limit, but can only play players within the limit.
- Reduce max player salary to cap ratio from 20% to 17.5%
- buyouts up to 5% of cap don’t count towards cap (bad contracts happen and sometimes are a result of decline to injury - need to have a system that allows for bad contracts to be shed without as strict of a penalty as it exists today)
- career ending LTIR should not be LTIR but categorized differently.
- mandatory neck guards
- reduce the UFA age (the league is getting younger and it’s ridiculous that players have no rights until age 27). By this age, every UFA signing is considered as an overpay because you are paying them until age 35 and well beyond their prime, which leads to those bad contracts stated above and need for buyouts.

If pettersson pulls a tkachuk
As much as I like Pettersson, this will cripple the Habs. Swap Dach with Pettersson and there’s still 2 holes in Montreal’s top 6. You’re putting all your eggs in one basket and relying on Hutson to become a superstar. If not, there’s no high end D on the Habs and a big hole on the right side - Mailloux and Barron is not what you want.
If Pettersson was signed long term to a value contract, then maybe, but once he signs what he deserves to get paid at $12M+, his trade value diminishes. There are very few top teams that can absorb a contract like that without giving back a large one that Vancouver doesn’t want, and for the teams that can fit Petey’s contract under the cap, it’s really high risk to mortgage the future.
I understand that a Pettersson trade would be astronomical but giving up 3 top 5 picks as well as another top 10 pick would be horrible asset management by the Habs during a rebuild.

Three 3Cs
I like this deal if I’m the Habs. Get a 2nd rounder for increasing the cap by $2M and Habs have a ton of cap space. It only leaves 1 retain spot 2024-2025 but the increase in a trade value by retaining 50% of a Dvorak, Armia, RyJo isn’t that much anyway, so by getting a 2nd now, you lock in that value right away.
Johansen will be on an expiring contract so he may be motivated and elevate his game. Not very likely but it’s not like Allen will elevate his game next year, so this is a good trade for the Habs.

Opinion
Mike Matheson plays 25:00 per game, skates like the wind and is top 10 in pts by defensemen. He has his faults and is not a top 10 defensemen by any means, but he also only makes $4.875M which is extremely good value given his production. These kind of defensemen are not available on the market and for good reason.
Debrusk is putting up 3LW numbers this year and is a pending UFA. He wouldn’t be considered as a main piece in a return for Matheson, but rather a piece to simply make the cap work. Add one of Poitras or Lysell and Boston would still have to add a pick to get the conversation going.

Deadline
I think it makes sense to trade Primeau but only if it addresses a Habs need. A 2026 2nd rounder isn’t what the Habs are looking for right now. I don’t think you do a Primeau trade in isolation but rather in a bigger trade with multiple pieces (player, prospect, moving up/down in this year’s 2024 draft, etc.)
The Savard trade doesn’t make sense. A late 2nd round pick is underwhelming if the Habs use up their last retention spot this year and only has one remaining next year. Would rather keep him for one more year and trade him next TDL for probably the same value.

Mtl 24-25
Huberdeau’s 7 year contract doesn’t fit Mtl’s timeline. That $10.5M contract will be too heavy to carry in 3-4 years time considering that the most likely outcome is Huberdeau will be playing on the 2nd line at age 34+.

Slafovsky might actually be decent
“Might” and “Decent”, while being conservative and not setting unrealistic expectations can be seen as a good thing, is also undermining the hard work he has put in to take leaps and bounds in his development. What he has shown in the last 30 games is that he is living up to being a #1OA pick.

If trade to LA falls through

Sunday and yesterday were travel days followed by the NHL awards. I can see contract negotiations picking up today. I think we will find out today if Dubois is actually interested in signing for 8 years in LA or if it was all a guise and he is only willing to sign 1 year or 3 years with them. I think the 8 years is valid, so the hold up is probably around NTC/NMC and signing bonuses.

Didn’t realize Avs had so much cap space. Is Landeskog done for the year?
Habs fan here… I doubt Monahan is worth a first. This foot injury of his is taking a long time to heal. The fact that he is injured again made his value drop from a 1rst to whatever it is now. That $3.1M cap space can be used to obtain a pretty decent not injury prone player. Doubt the Avs or any team is willing to take on such a risk with a 1rst round pick.

What is the cost for WiFi
I’m obviously biased but I think he’s an untouchable right now. His ceiling is undefined. He has a great shot from the point so who knows if he caps out at 6 goals per year or can become a 20g defenseman (he had 6g in 18 OHL playoff games so the potential is there). He can make the first dangle and his passing ability is good albeit not great, but all in all extremely effective. His size is obviously his biggest asset. A unicorn in the NHL right now. All enforcers in the NHL are forwards who play 6 to 12 mins a game. Arber has top 4 potential which means he is on the ice 20-22 mins per game. He doesn’t have a NHL playoff game under his belt yet but what team wouldn’t want this kid on their team battling it in the playoffs for them.
Xhekaj’s biggest weakness is he takes a lot of penalties. He’s not just racking up minutes for fighting but he’s taking a lot of minor penalties. I don’t think this is a part of his game that he will be able to clean up fully and I think he will continue to take a lot of penalties even if not as much as he does now. But imagine he is able to keep up with the smaller players’ speed… Arber’s ceiling would be through the roof.
There’s no team willing to offer a fair value package relative to Xhekaj’s ceiling right now. It would have to be an overpayment but what GM would be willing to offer that much. It’s all risk and at best you break even.
And before I forget, this is a really good kid. Very humble coming from parents with an immigrant background. Extremely hard working and very likeable in the room. He may very well be close to his peak as a #5 defenseman but given his age of 21, turning 22 in January, have to think that he becomes a unicorn (due to his massive size) top 4D who can play PP and PK. He takes a lot of penalties and is not a shutdown defenseman, but he is more than capable to play top minutes, and can put up 35-40pts, including 17-20 goals per year. A true beast in the playoffs!
