Hawks aren't blowing one of their two much coveted retention spots for such a small deal. If they retain on key players much desired by another team, they're likely to garner one or more high picks/coveted prospects out of a deal. Gotta save those valuable retention spots for THOSE trades (IMO)!

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>Why would the Hawks do this?</div></div>
If I were a betting man, I might consider something like this more seriously. Lavoie has an interesting toolkit and he kind of fits the mold for how CHI wants to play, if he can take his game to the next level. I also think there is a decent chance that, in time, he could be much more than a bottom 6 forward. But, I typically hate gambling. Then again, even if we got a 2nd for Dickinson with retention, there is no guarantee that pick gets us someone who is half the player Lavoie is.

Creating Cap
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CP11</b></div><div>I think the Wahlstrom trade is fair however islanders would not be interested in trading him and with what comes back. Addison is basically Dobson and islanders rather bring back Mayfield or a similar cheaper player than him for the 3rd pairing. Islanders have been trading prospects so I don't think they'd be interested in trading for any. Also, I doubt they are even ready to move on from Wahlstrom yet. Wild most likely have to look elsewhere. They could look into other 1st rd talents that may need a fresh start with a low cap hit like they did with Sam Steel.</div></div>
Yeah fair point on the utility of Addison. Wasn't sure if Isles were considering trading Wahlstrom or not (or what they'd want back if they were to). Been seeing a lot of proposals involving him, so figured I'd throw out one.
Don't agree with your logic on them not having interest in prospects due to them previously trading some away. That's typically circumstantial on a trade-by-trade basis, and doesn't hold up to enough sound reasoning for my taste. But to each their own on that take.
And yeah you can certainly go for the Steel types, or you can try to look go one level beyond that. Sort of up to preference and tolerance for price. In this case, I obviously went for the latter. Sort of a get what you pay for kinda thing on that.

Signings-wise - Engvall isn't taking a pay cut to stay in NY, and Mayfield isn't coming back on a second team-friendly deal like you have him doing here.
Bailey would cost more to dump than a 4th, and because of that cost I think it's better to eat the buyout penalty and keep the picks. Cal also a)isn't getting traded by Lou Lamoriello and b) isn't getting a 4th rounder as a soon-to-be 36 year old with his recent injury history.
I also don't think there's a much better team here. You've basically turned Palmieri & Dobson (at a $9.1M combined cap hit) into Debrincat and Severson ($14.1M). Simon Holmstrom doesn't really look like a 2nd line player yet, either, so any bonus you've got from turning Lee into Debrincat on line 1 really gets nerfed by turning Palmieri (and that fairly dominant Engvall-Nelson-Palms line) into Holmstrom. Roster is just too top-heavy, if anyone can match up against that top line it's going to be even harder for the middle-6 to carry this team than it has been this season.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CP11</b></div><div>In this situation the trade involves them signings Severson, very similar player. Dobson obviously has more upside but grabbing a high scoring winger and filling Dobsons void doesn't necessarily make them worse. Its Debrincat and Severson or Dobson and Palmieri</div></div>
In a cap world, giving Debrincat 9 mill per has the potential to be a disaster. He hasn't shown he can produce at a high rate without Patrick Kane - and severson is already approaching 30 as Dobson is entering his prime. The isles would be better off using the extra 5 mill to add a player in addition to palmieri and dobson

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CP11</b></div><div>I can agree that it may cost more to move, however I figured Chicago may look for guys with 1 year left with some cap hit to ensure they hit the cap floor. It wont be very desirable for FAs to sign there this summer. Also Bailey is still somewhat serviceable, if he gets decent minutes I can see him putting up decent points to be a trade asset for Chicago to move at the 2024 deadline for another draft pick while retaining salary.</div></div>
Hawks can sign Domi for 2 or 3 years and Drouin for a year at 4 million and fill out every other roster spot with a rookie on an entry level deal and hit the cap floor. If not those 2, then plenty of those types you can throw some money at in hopes of a pump and dump at the deadline that give you better odds than Bailey of actually getting something.

Meier and rental trades
All these look pretty good. Shipping out Karlsson is a pipe dream but that'd be important to consider when retaining for both Bonino & Reimer: would want to keep a retention slot handy in case EK deal could be worked out. If they are shipping out Meier there is no point in keeping Karlsson. Might as well go full blowup

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CP11</b></div><div>Palms has a NTC so doesn't work unless he waives it for Boston. I dislike the trade anyway. I understand it saves 900k on the cap but not worth the downgrade plus losing a 2nd rounder. Rather see UFA signings like Milano or Rodrigues for cheaper than 3.1M and Murray for 1M if Palms (Pageau or Beau) has to go for Kadri to work.
Love the Chychrun trade tho, ARI may want a different player than Bailey but they can flip him if they wanted by deadline no doubt.
Ross trade may have the isles adding the 5th instead of Chicago lol.</div></div>
Arizona deal is fair value without the retention. Unfortunately it’s been reported the Coyotes are asking for an arm and a leg in any deal for Chychrun.
One NHL Insider said “Bill Armstrong acts like he’s trading McDavid and he’s really just trading a guy who is worse than Oliver Klyington.”’
