2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #6: The Quest for Lord Stanley's Cup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>Wanna see why I say Goalies are silly geese
Connor Hellebuyck is in the Vezina conversation and will probs win it
60 games 2.39 GAA and a 0.921SV
Jets got eliminated tonight and in those 5 games
5.23GAA and a 0.864SV
And here's the kicker at the TDL WPG spent
1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th for a 5 playoff games run</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CantStopWontStop</b></div><div>The jets allowed 14% of the goals they allowed during the entire season in 5 games in round 1.
From the lowest goals against in the entire league to this is really hard to process.</div></div>
And Hellebuyck was arguably one of their best players in that whole series, he made tons of great saves and hardly any of the goals were cheap ones.
The Jets D blew it big time; and not just the blueliners, their whole team D fell apart after the 2nd period of game 1 and only came back for the first half of game 5. Colorado's speed, transition, and relentless forechecking attack just had them scrambling and the scoring came in bunches that demoralized the Jets. Josh Morrissey was about the only consistent threat for them.

I’m preferring Utah HC as the final name.
Maybe I’ve thought about so many names they all just kinda seem generic and lazy. Like what low grade theme park would name its newest ride. So why not be generic and lazy to the extreme, own it and do it well, go big or go home. Could refer to them as whatever people from Utah call themselves, or just Utah. (A Ute?, the Utes?) (I’ve recently lived thru the St. Louis MLS expansion and really like our branding there, local ownership enhances marketing opportunity and impact, impresses upon fans that advertising partners are “us”).
It would be fun if their mascot was a snake and it was a dude in a modified green inflatable flailing arms man costume, so for that I’m rooting for venom or poison or whatever. They could have a power play dance for the fans that looks absolutely stupid and ridiculous, making it amazing, where they all wiggle around like snakes.</div></div>
Too "futbol-y" for me for hockey; think it still has to be a part of the NHL branding style.
BTW - A "Ute" is a Native American tribe or a member of the Ute Nation, there are several tribes and also what the state flagship NCAA school nickname is: Utah Utes so there is noway they encroach on that.
Citizen of Utah call themselves Utahns; not really good for a team nickname.

Sorry but that’s a hard no for me lol. It just seems to out of place that it wouldn’t even seem like an NHL team. I don’t think Yetis, Mammoth, or Outlaws are generic names either.

It's gotta be something around Bees. It's the beehive state, literally in their emblem. Utah Bees? Utah Yellow Jackets? Utah Swarm? Utah Buzz? Utah Bee-yonce's? Easy arena nickname - The Hive.
Is it just me or does seeing Utah this many times start to make the word look weird?

It, A, is kind of boring and generic, B, doesn’t scream hockey, and C, probably works best with a fire theme and we already have the flames in the NHL. So pretty easy no for me
And of course, 1. Yetis
As mentioned with Mammoth, I’m glad this is Yetis and not Yeti. But overall I think Utah Yetis should be what this team is called. Yetis are big and fierce (but have a lovable side too so good mascot potential), they’re from the mountains, they’re associated with snow, they’re white which can leave the jersey colour to be up in the air, and Utah Yetis sounds good and rolls off the tongue well. Hopefully this wins the contest</div></div>
I had originally thought that something like Utah Hotshots would be cool (Wildfire Firefighters that drop in on helicopters; pretty much heroes out in the west) so if they incorporated that into the "Fury" I would like it more but the connection is kind of weak.
I thought Yetis were just fancy expensive coolers that all the hipsters had and drinking cups before Stanley's became cooler? It's a stretch since it is a Himalayan myth and not much of a Rocky Mountain one; we have more Sasquatch legends out here and alien cow mutiliation than Yeti.

Many have had high praise for the former AHL Champion (Head Coach), it’ll be interesting to follow if he can follow in the footsteps of former new hires like Cooper.

:mapleleafs
JD Bunkis had an interesting point on the Maple Leafs today.
They’re obviously the most polarizing market in Canada (and easily have a case for the whole league) but more than that, they’re the most fascinating to cover.
Hear the point out (I’m extrapolating from what he said).
They are obviously the most covered, and have so many voices and stories that circulate and they dominate in both social and mass media coverage. But there’s nothing anyone can do because they’re just such a sight.
His example:
Boston is cut and and dry.
Peeke is week to week (LB), he’s out.
He won’t be on the ice.
We’re rotating our goalies. Done.
Toronto..
Nylander is __________ deal with it.
But he’s at practice because _________ .
Matthews isn’t at practice; _________ .
It’s not a criticism but it’s just simply how could you not cover this as a fan or journalist?
If Swayman was missing from practice today, or McDavid wasn’t taking rushes - there would be the same alarm bells.
Which continues (including more extrapolating from JD):
You have Mitch being dubbed both an elite, top winger in the league - as “The Invisible Man”.
Both are true.
And now you have a team who’s going to have to evaluate keeping “The Invisible Man” which means payday, while you have Matthews who has battled adversity and won over the fan base.
There isn’t a more NERVOUS fan base in the league. And that’s why there’s so much coverage.
It’s not an overreaction or over-saturated atmosphere; there’s just simply SO much going on around them week-to-week
yet we can’t even get a Nylander is week-to-week or day-to-day….
Games 3 and 4 arguably will dictate the rest of their run.
They’ve survived losing Game 1 decisively by rebounding in Game2: and they’ve done it without Nylander “and Marner”.
But can they take control on Home Ice.
Because if they can do it, the fan base will go bananas.
If they don’t… the fan base will go bananas… but this way includes booing in your own barn.
EDIT:
Even funnier after JD has a great like 30 minute segment about all this, and after I post this;
Keefe just makes some clear statements on both Nylander (possible for tonight) and Matthews (maintenance as expected) amid all the discourse within the last 2 hours.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CantStopWontStop</b></div><div>Anybody have a guess on Chychrun’s trade value and next contract?
Revisiting his last trade, he went for a sub 16 draft pick (unknown at time and top 5 protected), a 2nd, and a 2nd 2 years later.
I’m finding him very comparable to Vince Dunn and his 4 year, 7.35AAV, and acquiring him gets you next season at his current aav of 4.6.
I wonder if Ottawa gets back “more” than they paid, primarily because Chychrun played all 82 games this past season, and the acquiring team would be extending at the time of trade. I think they can flip him for more.
I dunno if my blues would be involved but the left side of our d is going to change eventually, one way or the other.</div></div>
Since the cap is going up, he'll want 7M+ for an extension as you said, plus a 10 team no trade that kicked in last summer... he seems like he'll have less value this time.
In the end he's worth whatever a GM is willing to pay in a bidding war.

Personally, I would keep Chychrun and move Chabot out if I were Ottawa.
Sanderson is the absolute stud of the future there and they need a RD complement to him (a defensively responsible partner) to allow Sanderson to push the play. Pesce would be ideal but Demelo or Matt Roy would be in the mix.
Chychrun-Zub as their 2nd pair would be ideal. If they strike out on their top pair targets then maybe Sean Walker and bump Zub up to the top pair.

Obviously, I'm biased about Chychrun's trade value, but I acknowledge that there's a distinct possibility we might get less than what we paid for him.
With that said, any trade for Chychrun should be about saving face.
I think an acceptable return on Chychrun would be a 1st + two 2nds, regardless of how high the 1st is.
It doesn't have to be #12 overall and it can even be #32 overall.
I also think that something like what Calgary got for Noah Hanifin as a pending UFA at the trade deadline would be acceptable.
A 1st + a conditional 2nd + a big right shot depth defenceman with a low cap hit.
As for what Chychrun might sign for, anywhere between 6.5 million and 8 million on an 8 year deal is well within his reach.
