Chariot got a 2023 First Round Pick. A 4th and a solid prospect who was a 3rd rounder last year. Manson got a 2nd and Drew Helleson who plays Right Defense and appears to have a much higher ceiling than Smilanic. I would argue that the Ducks got a better return than Montreal did. Don't let the optics of a 1st round pick cloud the rest of the details.

Maybe, but you have to be real careful asking for more on a trade that is landing them a quality return. If this deal is available the Flyers have to take it.

I like Tippett a lot if he's the 2nd piece. I prefer Samoskevich as the primary and then Tippett. Maybe they can get an additional 3rd round pick. I'm not sure they'll get a better return for Giroux as a rental.
Tippett may not be a #10 overall top 6 winger like hoped but I could see him being a productive 3rd line winger in the NHL at the very least.

I'm guessing Manson mainly wanted Colorado, so he gets less of a return, Giroux only wants Florida so he won't get much, apparently Giordano only wants Toronto so he won't get much. It's players like Chariot, Jarncrok, lindholm etc who are getting massive returns. Some Teams are going to have to work harder than others.</div></div>
Manson fetched a great return. I'm not sure the Ducks would have been able to beat it. I'm sure a team would have offered a first but Helleson and a 2nd is better than just a first.

They do if they're struggling with the checking and defensive assignments and Florida's top 9 is scoring at a high rate. You're allowed to have any opinion you want on Tippett. Some will value him as nothing or as a B prospect. Other's will still see him as an A prospect still. A young player who has struggled and has been unable to find a role that works for him. His AHL production this season seems to show a corner is being turned. I'll leave it up to the Scouts who seem him playing to assess where he ranks as a prospect. My feeling is he's still an A level prospect that a team would give up a late first for.

Maybe. I also believe there's a few players with delayed development currently given all of the circumstances of the last few years. Jost is a good comparable except for he was given many more opportunities to date.

Again, it depends on how you value Tippett. If you see him as a bottom 6 forward this trade isn't for you. If you see him as a top 6 forward who hasn't been given his shot then you might view this very differently.

That’s FOUR first round picks, right? Of course not.</div></div>
You notably left out Boston's 2021 1st round pick Fabian Lysell. Remember, the Hossa trade was in March 2008. The 2007 first round pick player did not lose that much value turning age 18 to 19.

Giroux Deadline Deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CMcAvoy73</b></div><div>Okay. I want you to think about this for a second. Lets just start with it taking you 14 seasons to find something that you think supports your case before showing how the two scenarios are nothing alike. 2008…..if you can’t find anything in the last decade, don’t you think its time to tap out on this one?
Now, for this, so called, “comparable.”
Hossa’s season prior to the trade was a 43 goal 100 point season. What was he, 28 or 29 at the time of the trade? He was also elite defensively, and overall just one of the best players in the league. Not to mention, he wasn’t alone. He came with pascal dupuis, who only spent a decade in Pittsburgh.
Not sure where you got the two first round picks thing. Hossa and Dupuis got a 1st, a prospect, and two third liners. Definitely a very big return, but so were the assets moved. Giroux hasn’t been a point per game for his last three seasons. He hasn’t scored more than 22 in four seasons.
In short: try again. Maybe if you go back 20 years you’ll find something.</div></div>
I mean you did bring up the last 15 Trade Deadlines yourself so it seemed relevant to mention, but I do apologize for pointing out a deal that did not fit your narrative.
Hossa got dealt for a 2008 first round pick and Esposito (the prospect) was the Penguins 2007 1st round pick. That's essentially 2 first round picks. Dupuis at the time of the trade was mostly a swap for Colby Armstrong. I know the Penguins end up getting the better end of that deal just in Dupuis, but he was mostly just a swap in depth players at the time as he had not been doing much of note with Atlanta.
You are right on Giroux not being Hossa. He's also not Iginla. The odds the Avalanche can re-sign Giroux are substantially higher as well. A next year's first round pick, a season ago 2nd round pick, and a B level prospect in Bowers is quite fair.

Giroux Deadline Deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CMcAvoy73</b></div><div>If that was the case, there would have never been a single story about giroux getting moved. You think GMs are sitting there saying, “hmmmm, lets go ahead and ignore all precedent, comparable etc and ask for the moon!”
No, GMs aren’t crazy. They know a 1st and a 3rd is on the high end of standard for a top six player.</div></div>
I don't think GM's go into trade talks limiting their trade return values because of precedents that do not fit perfectly. If you think that Giroux's value is dropping because he has not been traded yet it actually has to do with the fact that he is about to play his 1,000th game as a Flyer and he wanted to hit that milestone.

The trade to compare to is more likely the Marian Hossa trade in 2008. That yielded a 2008 First, the PENS 2007 first round pick, and a B level player.
The trade on this post is likely too much I'll agree with you there. But there's no reason to think the Flyers could got get Behrens, the 2023 1st round pick, and Bowers for Giroux. Behrens is a recent 2nd round pick, 2023 is next year's first not this year's, and Bowers, who is more likely a project or B level prospect at this stage.

Two low level prospects do not equate to a 3rd. Iginla is not the comparison to this trade. Iginla was injured the year of his trade and not doing that well in particular. The Flames were also more motivated to move the player. I could see the Flyers not trading Giroux at all if the best offers are a first and third.

Giroux Deadline Deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CMcAvoy73</b></div><div>There is something wrong with the deadline rental market…there’s a clear cap. You can tell me until you’re blue in the face that lesser players got almost as much, but you’re going to have a really hard time funding more than one or two players that ever got more. Duchene is probably going to be as close as you get, which was a 1st, and a conditional first. That said, it wound up being just the first, an exchange of low level prospects.
So it seems pretty simple to me, the floor is to high, and the ceiling is too low for rental prices.</div></div>
To say it's a first and a third is a bit simplistic at this stage. Giroux is not showing any signs of breaking down or being injury prone to end his career. He just turned 34 unlike many other UFA rental deals that involved players like Iginla at age 36.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NMAvsFan</b></div><div>Which is why I wouldn't do that deal - the organizational depth is almost used up which means they have very little in the way of cheap contracts to plug upcoming holes. They're already renting Manson, I don't believe they can afford to rent Giroux if the price is Barron or even Olausson. There are other options to bolster the bottom six that will be more affordable and make the team better; Giroux would be a luxury and he'd be great to have but the price could be prohibitive. We'll see but I can't wrap my head around Sakic renting Giroux for Barron or Olausson.</div></div>
Giroux might be more affordable to re-sign than you think. Kadri will likely want a big pay day as a UFA. Giroux has already had a big contract. He'll value winning more. The AVS also have Burakovsky and Nichuskin who will likely get big raises on the open market. The AVS could very likely keep Manson and move on from Erik Johnson this offseason as well. Giroux might feel like an unnecessary addition because the top 6 of Colorado scores plenty, it's very important to have depth for injuries and beating the top teams requires 3rd lines to be able to score to win a series. If Giroux or whomever falls to the 3rd line Colorado's 3rd line becomes very likely unmatched in offensive firepower. They become a team that is extremely difficult to shutdown like Tampa Bay.

That's a risk on those players part as well. Starting your career as a player that is deemed to have no loyalty and difficult to negotiate with is probably a bad idea for most players.
