(PIT/FLA) - Hörnqvist for Matheson, Sceviour
I think this is a rare Jim Rutherford WIN. For the record I think (and have thought for years now) he's a terrible GM, but there's ALOT to unpack in this trade. First for foremost. This trade has Coach Q written all over it! and I'm going to pat myself on the back here. I 100% predicted Matheson would fail under coach Q. Not only did his ATOI drop by 4 minutes...his February and March had a few single digit games and a bunch in the low teens. Coach Q can't help himself. If you're young and you turn the puck over...you're in the dog house. There is no development time for him. Coach Q is NEVER playing a run and gun...1st to 7 goals win...type of game.
I understand it's a risk, but you're going to get a guy in Matheson that fits your system. This isn't an insult at all...PIT is a run and gun team. That's how they win games. They're not beating people up. Their defense is...let's keep the puck in the offensive zone. If you let up 5 goals...not a problem in the world because we probably got 6. No shame in that! Matheson isn't winning a ton of board battles. He might be a bit weak against the cycle. WHATEVER! He can move the puck up the zone. That's all PIT cares about. I do think you'll see 40+ point seasons. The catch is once the HOFers leave....then what happens, but that's for a different post.
Hornqvist - He's Injury prone and let's not kid each other Crosby faces the shutdown line. Malkin 2nd then Hornqvist gets easy pickens. Now Florida is expecting a 33+ player to get better while getting older and needing to play against tougher competition....oh and more minutes? That's not a recipe for success. Florida can't replace Hoffman or Daddy with Hornqvist

Pittsburgh Penguins signed Marcus Pettersson (5 Years / $4,025,175 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Random2152</b></div><div>Not sure why he got so much. Good dman and all but he should have been closer to the holl contract than this massive overpay</div></div>
Justin Holl is 27 years old and has played 61 NHL games. Acting like a 23-year-old defenseman who should be getting better over the course of his contract is comparable in anyway is insane.
Perfect example of Leafs homerism and "but what does this mean for the Leafs?" that I have come to expect from this user.

I'm saying Peterson should have signed a contract closer to holl the fact that they are different terms didn't help your point</div></div>
You call me a homer lol but talk so highly of Holl. Holl is in his first full year, no shot he was signing any other contract than what he signed for. Leafs weren't giving term to a 28 year old unproven player. Pettersson is playing his 2nd season in the top 4, and getting stronger every year. They gave him term to lock him up while still improving. If anyone is a homer, its you.... And 3 minutes less is a lot of time

Just stop you are talking nonsense.
Holl is 27 years old and this is his 1st full NHL season.
MP is 23 and this is his 2nd full season. It's not even comparable.

Similar contracts to Maatta and Dumoulin’s. Long term with a 4 million cap hit. I don’t know if he earned that contract and considering one’s an overpayment and the other one is a steal (if healthy). I don’t mind this contract at all frankly and he’s still young so he can grow. All in all this is overpayment but not by much.

This is also Holl's first full season, and Pettersson is having a 2nd straight solid season. Pettersson is also playing 20 min a night, compared to Holl at 17 min. Pettersson is also a lot younger. Pettersson also signed for more years. Im not sure where the comparison is

Top 4 dman making $4 mill a year after signing a very very team friendly 1 year deal. Not a massive overpay

Steven Burch twitter trade idea MIN
Any Minnesota fan that doesn't say, 10000% yes is a delusional homer that can't be taken seriously. What a joke of an era we live in. Rielly goes from being 5th in Norris votes and now has no value.
Rielly is light years more valuable than Brodin and Kapanen has more value than Zucker who's older, slower and isn't producing much more, despite getting way more opportunities. This is just a travesty.

The year is 2200. It's been 40 years since the bombs dropped. The earth was scorched in a war no one remembers the point of. In a desolate hole in the now permanently frozen north, a voice could be heard whispering from the shadows:
"Marty Marincin has signed a contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs"

With all of our current winger injuries, I'm sure Kovalchuk will be a good 3rd line winger. Don't see a fit when everyone comes back though. Might be able to flip him for a pick at the TD

He's playing top 4, but he doesn't belong there. Just because the Leafs are weak at D, doesn't make him a top 4 defensemen.
